Anonymous Coward User ID: 32724170 Canada 01/24/2013 08:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In another thread, someone mentioned a website that was listed by an anti-virus company as being a possible malware site. Quoting: AwakenedDude I understand that most people are cost conscious and purchase PC's for various reasons. However, given Windows LONG history of being a virus magnet and extremely shitty reliability, WTF? Is it too hard for most people to shitcan MS and simply install a different OS? I can see needing to run it for "special" software, but for the love of all things holy, you CAN do almost everything one needs to do WITHOUT Windows. Even better, most are FREE and are not affected (yes, exceptions are out there) malware. Just throwing this out for general discussion. Personally, I've bought many PC's and laptops that came with Windows... primarily because it's hard to buy one that doesn't come with it installed. Why not just install another OS (Linux) and be done with it. What you'll end up with is a PC that actually does what it's supposed to. What gives? Too hard to deal with? Love of Windows runneth too deeply? Peace. While Windows is not perfect it is the best of all operating systems for the avreage computer. Apple products suck, they have just had better marketing. BUT their share price is tanking because of said crap that they sell. Before you say Linux, it is the worse of the bunch. The average computer user can't use it and the amount of quality software is miniscule in comparison. |

Switching to a different flavor of shit isn't an improvement. Well, that would depend on your perspective. And I'm guessing your perspective is "Everything Sucks". However, an alternative perspective would be that a FREE operating system that actually doesn't BSOD, has incredible community support, and is immune to 99% of all the malware (out of the box) is a pretty big incentive. And the icing on the cake: PERFORMANCE/SPEED Peace. |

Did you know that Tivo, DirectTV, Roku, and MOST routers/wifi use Linux? Hell, even Android phones and tablets run Linux. Want to know why? Stability. Security. Reliability. Cost. Just sayin'. Quoting: BuggedOut need outlook... the rest I can do without. Can you run these on a 'virtual machine' in linux or similar? Absolutely. In fact, Oracle has a program (free) called VirtualBox that will let you run another OS (like windows) along side. Fire it up, run your apps, and then shut it down. On another note, have you looked into Gimp and other associated alternatives to the Adobe cabal? There's a steep learning curve to them, but well worth it if you wish to be free. Peace. |

And if people have common sense then they can avoid virus. If not they should instal Microsoft Security Essential, Microsoft's free anti virus. Here's the link. [link to windows.microsoft.com] |

Love of Windows runneth too deeply? Peace. The Windows family of OS have a 92% market share for desktop OS. With that kind of market share, software developers and hardware manufacturer are going to develop for it. Games, hardware, software, basically everything is developed for Windows, and then Mac in a second place. So I think for most people, it's not even in their thought process. Windows works, it's familiar, and there is software available for it. I've used just about every OS there has been, with multiple laptops and dual boots, but I have found it is limiting not having Windows around. Yes, you CAN make due, with let's say Ubuntu, but there are going to be things that it sucks at or the free software you mention is total crap. HTML 5 was supposed to be the savior for native application development, but it's not taking off where some had predicted. People LIKE native applications, and trying to run an application under essentially a browser or browser component on any platform, although a great concept (Java anyone?) it's not adopting as fast as some might have expected. Not sure what to think about Microsoft anymore--they excel in server OS, development/.NET, server applications (SharePoint, SQL Server, Project, Exchange), but with Windows 8, they are back in the world of a Vista fiasco, and in the light speed changes and incredible openness and talent that exists, others will not hesitate to step in at the right moment with new innovation. |
