I can't imagine even the most insane person inventing such detailed stories,



you really don't give the human imagination enough credit. Read ANY great set of books dealing with a mythical world such as Lord of the Rings or A Story of Fire and Ice.

Now, take that ability and translate it into an ability to believe in a fantasy world based on current personalities and events.
