Cipro for a runny nose is ridiculous behaviour - I'd consider suing your GP - It sounds to me like when folks take their Cars to the Garage to have them fixed and the mechanic deliberately sets something else to break for further business down the road - To a Doctor your Body is a cashcow that needs breaking to fix or trial Drugs/Procedures on.

Cipro,

Ffs.
 Quoting: Spittin'Cesium

how exactly does that doctor benefit from prescribing the cipro? the patient is already in the office, and he/she will be paid for the visit. there is no extra payment for the Rx. and how are you diagnosing a runny nose vs a sinus infection via the internet? morons.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31011490

Cipro is a broad spectrum antibiotic. I have to wonder what the doctors know this flu season. 90% of the people I know who have gotten a flu or virus that turns into a sinus or other respiratory infection this season, has been prescribed Cipro. I had a bladder infection last month and my doctor prescribed Cipro. I asked the nurse why an antibiotic that was so potent instead of the usual drugs given and she said because it deals most bacteria that can cause infections.

I find it all strange.

Cipro is not the only antibiotic that can cause the tendonitis etc. issues. Levaquin can have the same side effects.

Also, I saw someone else say something about vitamin D.....good advice.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31698368

I think, for the most part, doctors are just ignorant, and they listen to the pharmaceutical industry too much. If they did their homework, they would realize that these drugs are not good for anyone, and in the long run are VERY harmful.

Why didn't you let it run its' course(scuse' the pun)instead?

Must remember that the Human Body is incredible at fighting infections but the more we take Antibiotics(literally means Anti-Life)the less chance your Immune system has of fighting of the next Infection you encounter.

Re: Prescribed an antibiotic (cipro) and its has screwed me up
I started taking it Tuesday night for a sinus infection. Some of the side effects are joint and muscle pain...which I started to get. A popping in my arm and wrist and pain in my arm that I haven't had for years (tendonitis). I read a bunch of information about it and there are yons of horror stories of being being disabeled by, even after 1 pill. I took three. I also causes insomenia and I have tossed and turned trying to sleep for the last 7 hours.

I am in so much pain! The doctor gave me a new antibiodic, Septra DS...I am so scared that Cipro has fucked me up. People are saying it can lead to toxicity. Even the information provided by the pharmacy says side effects can appear months later. Many people are saying they started to get pain and over the next couple days it got worse to where they couldn't walk. It leads to muscle wasting and nerve pain.

I mean even last night I leaned on my arm, plam down and my wrist felt like it was going to break. I am getting shooting nerve pain in my butt and leggs.

Now I can't sleep.

Turns out cirpo was made to treat anthrax. Even PBS wrote an article about how bad it is and that the FDA won't do anything about it.

I am so scared. How can I detox?

CIPRO caused me to go into A-Fib three hours after I swallowed the 2nd dose. It is poison. My heart is healthy, nothing wrong with it.

I suffered with chronic sinusitis for nearly ten years. I truly suffered in pain. Sometimes I would have to stay on an antibiotic for three months at a time.

I will tell you what I did to stop them. I'm not a doctor, this is just what I did. I went to the HFS, got me some colloidal silver spray and I sprayed it/inhaled it up into my nostrils and within the hour the sinus pain began to let go. Whatever was going on with me, that killed it.

After that, I stopped getting them for almost a year. Now I get only one, ever so often, about once a year. When I do, I either spray the silver into my nose, or I take it by mouth.

The HFS can tell you which brand. I don't want to come off as if I'm selling something.

But that is what ended the constant rounds of antibiotics I had to pay for out of pocket.

I hope you feel better, because I do know what hell sinuses can be and it sure is a hell.

Antibiotics wipe out the good bacteria as well as the bad, so if you take enough for long enough, there's a chance that you'll have to get a fecal enema...that's where they take fecal matter from a healthy person and literally shove it up your ass...see, there are millions of different kinds of bacteria in our GI tract and science only has names for just a few of them.

Your appendix should help as this is where a lot of the "good bacteria" hide while the antibiotics are in your system. But still, taking unnecessary antibiotics is creating a serious problem with superinfections in humans.

I'm in my tenth day of a fourty pill course of Septra DS for a myrsa infected boil on the back of my freakin neck on top of my spine.

In the literature it says that while there may be some side effects, your doctor thinks you need this medication regardless of the side effects.

It has been a physical battle....lots of jerky joints, lack of stamina, shortness of breath, sour stomach (yes am eating yogurt and drinking cultured buttermilk)

By the way...DS stands for double strength.

A myrsa infection on your face or near your spine need particular attention cause the bacteria can burrow into organs, veins, etc....pretty scary stuff

Your nose harbours myrsa so the next time you pick your nose, don't scratch anything.....

Also, research indicated that tumeric was effective on boils and it was....You can't use a steroid for the itching cause it makes it worse but a poltice of tumeric did the trick in about 20 minutes...but it's messy

I had a sinus infection 20 years ago and decided to take vitamins and let it run it's course.

Got a terrible headache. went to the ER had a CAT scan and ended up in the hospital for a week and had to have surgery for a brain abscess.

When my sinuses start hurting I get antibiotics right away.

Somethings you just shouldn't play around with and for me a sinus infection is one of them.

Colloidal silver is good for infections,
 Quoting: stars

yes it is, and the reason why many sinus infections are so responsive to it is because some sinus infection are fungal and others bacterial. And sometimes, they are a mix of both! This is why sinus sufferers sometimes never get totally better on the antibiotic.

If it's fungal, all the antibiotic does is take down inflammation and relieve some pain for a few days, but it will in turn make the fungus worse.

It took me years to figure this out for myself and I suffered needlessly.

Re: Prescribed an antibiotic (cipro) and its has screwed me up
Having had chronic sinus infections for years along with pneumonia and taken all types of antibiotics, including cipro this is the first year I've beaten it without having to go to the doc. Last Saturday I came down with a virus I picked up at Target. By Sunday I couldn't breath because of all of the congestion and having pneumonia annually for years was thinking crap.

Remember that youtube video of the guy who almost died and was cured with IV vitamin C in Australia? When watching that a couple of weeks back I saw another link on youtube on how to make Liposomal Vitamin C. Impressed I had just ordered the ingredients from Amazon.com along with an ultra sonic unit to make this stuff at home and was still waiting for the Lecithin granules to arrive . Now it's Monday, MLK Day and no Postal Service delivery. The fever started meaning an infection was setting in.

My spouse went to the Health Food store (which was open) and purchased the Lecithin granules brought it home and made up a batch so I could start taking it Monday night. Fever was gone the next day.

I've been on it 4 days now and the sinus congestion is almost completely gone. In the past, I would be plugged up, hacking away and on the 3rd day of antibiotics because bronchial pneumonia would have set in. Then it would take another 3 months for all of that to clear up.

This stuff really works and costs a lot less then all of the doctor visits, cold medicines, regular prescription medicines and so on. All I can say it worked for me and given how impaired my immune system has been over the years that's saying something. I wrote the recipe down from watching the youtube link. I'm sorry you're going through this and really hope you get well soon.

How to Make Liposomal Vitamin C At Home

[link to www.youtube.com]

Have you ever wished you could get the many health benefits of high-dose intravenous (IV) vitamin C at home, at low cost? Discover a cheap and simple way to multiply the effectiveness of oral Vitamin C. One gram of this simple megavitamin C can do the work of up to 8 grams of pure vitamin C by intravenous injection! Wellness expert Arthur Doerksen shows you how to make it in your kitchen in less than 10 minutes. Update - Remember to soak the lecithin granules for 2 - 4 hours before blending with the Vitamin C.

This recipe allows for:

30 g in 24 ounces water = 1.25 g/oz (30 ml)

At 70% efficiency, this is 900 mg per ounce of Liposomal Vitamin C

and is 6-8 time more powerful then IV Vitamin C

Liposomal Encapsulated Vitamin C Recipe

3 cups of distilled water
2 Tablespoons vitamin C Asorbic Acid crystals
6 1/2 level Tablespoons of non-GMO Lecithin granules
Ultrasonic Cleaner

Directions:

1) 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) pure vitamin C (Asorbic Acid crystals) into 1 cup (250 ml) warm distilled water - mix it up and let it dissolve

2) 6 1/2 level tablespoons (90 ml) non-GMO lecithin granules into 2 cups (500 ml) warm distilled water - dissolve

3) Blend Lecithin in blender for about 45-60 seconds

4) Add vitamin C solution to blender for about 45-60 seconds

5) About 26 oz goes into ultra sonic unit - (480 seconds = 8 minutes long) stir entire time

Pour into glass containers and refrigerate. (Stored at room temperature lasts only about 2 or 3 days)

Dosage: Take on an empty stomach, preferably 1 hour before you eat and don’t eat for 30 minutes after. Dosage varies… from a couple of teaspoons 2 times a day to 1-2 oz. shots 2-3 times a day.
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

LOL! Good luck finding root causes, unless a person needs to switch to wood flooring instead of carpeting. Common sense about our exposures even benzene in detergents and especially fabric softeners.
Anything that rides the air that you breathe, especially indoors.

So far as homeopathy or naturopathic, hey it works..to a point..and I've known of people who delayed and got deeper into trouble because of it with serious pneumonia. Delay can be just as deadly.

In my experience salt is the most healing substance on earth.
Sinuses remind me of a coral reef as does the structure of the ear and it seems cleansing mists based on salts, not so heavyhanded with oil but a drop or two.

Any extreme or desperate approach either way will miss the point.
There are times an antibiotic can pull a person off the brink, but not CIPRO, not sh*t just developed in the last 15 years, not these over-the-top poisons. Right now my story isn't helpful to the OP, but thanks to these overkill antibiotic poisons I am still injured after 8 years.
To maintain I use 100% Emu oil internally, Dr. Ohhira's probiotics, Straus yogurt and good water.

The medical profession has been turned inside out into some counter-intuitive gross grotesquery not ever to be taken on faith..you must continue to think and take nothing on faith they tell you. Generally drs now are malevolent because of their unthinking ignorance. But we know that.

Less is more, trust your body's intelligence and it is vastly intelligent beyond imagining.

Do what you must, OP. Less is more, common sense is even more than that.

Two years ago I crushed my right hand. I was prescribed a course of Cipro due to bone being exposed and the subsequent fear of a bone infection. The next day, the knot-head Orthopaedic also placed me on a series of Steroids, as well a Neurontin due to the nerve damage.

It was about three (3) months later that I actually began to experience the culmination of effects as it reacted to my body. I was weak, I had more pain than the actual injury caused, tore the tendon in my left arm and both Achilles tendons as a result of the tendon weakening side-effect. I lost about 30 pounds - and just for the record; before this event, I was about 225 with a 7% body fat.

I went from an active, constantly outdoors in all sorts of weather guy that was benching well into the 300 field to a guy that could hardly get out of a recliner, could hardly walk, couldn't sleep, had no energy, and couldn't hardly flip a frying pan. I was definitely restricted in the amount & type of work I could do, and being an outdoor activity/ adventure-based business; I am sure you can understand this was a truly devastating, life altering event.

I did the research AFTER things started going awry. I have broken many bones, and am quite familiar with the healing/ recovery process - figured a good 6 weeks or so and I'll be good as new again. I was wrong. As the side effects began to become more prominent, that's when we began to look into the reasonable causes. That's when we found the literally HUNDREDS of pages of warnings and precautionary statements regarding Cipro - the top of which was the contraindication for use alongside of steroids.

Stay away from it. If you think doctors give a flip about you anymore other than you possess valid insurance - you're wrong. You are a number passing through the office - nothing more.

I am not a vengeful man - there are, however, a few doctors that have made my Fight Club List over the past two years.

i've slowly "snorted" then gargled a mild solution of warm distilled water & non-iodized sea salt for a quick cure of sinus problems, too: having read of this method years ago in Shirley MacLaine's biography (that's a good book). I use a styrofoam disposable coffee cup or a dixie cup to treat myself (it's boring staying at home being sick! talk about something to look forward to! watch the clock!) rather than taking it from the spout of a neti pot. IMHO that's wise because when the cup is discarded re-infection is avoided plus there's no sterility maintenance or question about where to keep it or worry it might get mistaken for a teapot. I mean, not being a neatfreak or a dirty-minded OCD germophobe - but seriously have you ever wanted to puke from observing a dusty dirty neti pot sitting on a shelf closeby someones toilet in their bathroom? It's like leaving festering petri out in the open. Wondering how long it's been sitting there since the last flu ... did they clean it after the last use? And is that thing put in the dishwasher with the dishes or just rinse it with hot tap water when it's used?

Re: Prescribed an antibiotic (cipro) and its has screwed me up
I've gotten into the habit of researching all medications I take, and you'd be shocked at some of the reported side effects. I take cipro when I need antibiotics(like maybe twice a year, if that)..because I'm allergic to penicillin. It has no side effects for me at all. I have to be very careful because some medications cause weird things for me. Like one time I went to the ER for a migraine, and I don't mean a little headache, I have death migraines that make you want to shoot your head off. They gave me compazine, and I always tell them I can't have benadryl because it makes my heart race. A few years ago they gave me benadryl and it made my heart get to 200 bpms and I've never taken it ever again. Well anyway, they gave me compazine, and it's supposed to have benadryl with it, at the time migraines were new to me and I didn't know that the two were supposed to go together to counter act the side effects of compazine. Well with about 5 minutes of an IV injection of that stuff, I went completely mental. I couldn't stop moving my body, my hands and legs went completely restless and my jaw started chattering. My hands were moving like I was mentally handicapped. It was so terrifying and then the psychological affects hit me, I started to get overly paranoid and ripped my own IV out and snuck out and RAN out of that hospital as fast as I could. It lasted two days, and I went to a different ER because I was scared of the one I went to before, and they had to give me ativan to calm my body down. It was terrible. I've had a ton of ER experiences that are incredibly frightening, so now I'm sure to talk to the nurses before they give me any medication.

That class of antibiotics was "black boxed" by the FDA a couple years ago. That means they are so bad, they would be illegal, but they stay legal because they are the only things that treat antibiotic resistant infections.

Your doc giving you that is pure negligence and I would at least change doc's if not sue.

Those drugs attack the "glue" that attaches your tendons to your bone. There is no blood flow to tendons, they dont really heal. So dont mess with them.

What I did find is contained in the above post re Emu especially. Do a search on this item, the one I found is called Wonder Oil (.com)..I still have a box of unopened corticosteroids unopened thanks to it.

There are things you can do daily to prevent flareups and even turn you toward regrowth if you're patient and consistent.

I'm sorry, yeah I know (as one too) uncomplicated consistent system support is the answer we have to get back functioning and regrowth of damaged internal systems. This takes patience.

Agreed -

I also took charge of this myself. Doctors seemed to have an almost universal reply "I don't know, I'm not familiar with complications, maybe you're just tired". I knew something had to be done - this wasn't "me".

I learned that an increase in magnesium would be the best, most effective counter. I ate LOTS of liver (which I do like anyway) to increase both magnesium and iron.

The process has been slow - I'm still working to reclaim that level of muscle weight and strength. I will never be able to reclaim the time lost, the experiences missed, the stress on my marriage, or the effects on our business. I/ we will be stronger for our future.

Re: Prescribed an antibiotic (cipro) and its has screwed me up
To replenish your healthy bacteria, eat Greek yogurt. Make sure it isn't sweetened with anything other than honey. Look for live culture in ingredients. Hope you feel better. Sinus infections can be serious and lead to infection of bone and brain, so treating it with antibiotics is recommended if it does not clear up on it's own.

It's unfortunate you seem to have had a reaction to the antibiotic chosen, but I have taken Cipro many times with no ill effects. Many other antibiotics do not work for me, so when I become ill, which is rare, I have to take a more potent form.

Good luck.

And if you do not mind my asking, why are you being prescribed Antibiotics anyway?

Cipro for a runny nose is ridiculous behaviour - I'd consider suing your GP - It sounds to me like when folks take their Cars to the Garage to have them fixed and the mechanic deliberately sets something else to break for further business down the road - To a Doctor your Body is a cashcow that needs breaking to fix or trial Drugs/Procedures on.

Cipro,

Ffs.

yes, seems very strange they would give cipro for this type of problem. I get frequent UTI's and kidney infections, and have been on a daily antibiotic for most of my life as a preventative (I know this is not good, but they started it when I was six months old. have tried to get off but get too many infections and hospitalizations.). Occasionally I get an infection that will only respond to cipro, but otherwise my doctor tries to avoid giving it to me. Cipro can be tough, but I have never had any long-lasting side effects once I stop taking it. Have gone on it more times than I can count. Assuming u really need an antibiotic, there are better ones than cipro for this type of infection. Many people though, and doctors for that matter, take/give out antibiotics much more than needed.

Re: Prescribed an antibiotic (cipro) and its has screwed me up
A few months back - I was seriously ill - sinus, ears, throat - after tetracycline, amoxicillin, NOTHING worked - doc tried Cipro. Doc said it was an infection - although he did not elaborate from there.

I also tried the natural therapies - nothing worked. I was as sick as I have ever been in my life.

I was better in less than a week.

I have had NO side effects.

So - sorry OP you are having difficulties - but in some cases, the stuff works.

Re: Prescribed an antibiotic (cipro) and its has screwed me up
My husband had many anti-biotics for sinus issues(they have little efficacy) and had them cauterized chemically and caustically, that burned a hole in his nasal passges and subequently surgery. Nada, nothing stopped him from getting infections.

NOW he uses a teaspoon of Betadine in very clean water (pint) and sniffles it into them and he maintains a much healtheir sinus environment.

I read somewhere that a side effect is a chronic inability to spell and increasingly egregious grammatical errors.

Salt water solution is real good too;

Lysterene is great, because itis really quick.

Health food store will give you many natural ideas also.

Example:
an herb called Marshmallow will keep the pain away, as it keeps the mucus wet and flowing so as not to dry and harden and cause blockage, thus infection in the third place.

Sinus infection can wind up in the ears; mastoids and cause surgery.
