The Hubble Space Telescope image before it was fixed.

The primary mirror had been ground to the wrong shape.

To further elaborate...with a reflective telescope, the main mirror at the rear of the telescope itself, gathers light, and reflects it back into smaller mirror, that image is then reflected into the eye piece...magnified and focused. The image we are presented with, shows the second smaller mirror. It has 3 rods holding the second mirror in place. That is the mirror that is reflected into the eye piece. However, I think there is more pertinent information I am leaving out because of the exact nature of the picture and date provided.

Astronomy contest time! I will give a free month upgrade to the first person who can correctly answer both parts of this question. What is this AND what specifically is causing it (I'm looking for a proper name here):
[link to farm9.staticflickr.com]
This photograph was taken on March 13, 1955.

It may not seem like this is enough information to answer the questions, but to a resourceful GLP'er there is already more than enough info here to figure it out. The date might seem like a distractor once you have the correct answer, but I put it out there to help you narrow down the possible sources. Have fun. If no one figures out the answer by tomorrow, I'll give a clue on how to find the answer. I was a bit sloppy in putting this together though, so I may have left a bread crum for those who are particularly clever.

I do not know what it is called but it has to do with the thing that holds the mirrors for the reflecting in a telescope.

Is it a side view of black hole, with the ring being gas light?

I like astronomy, but I'm certainly not an astronomer, so please forgive the lack of correct language.

Sorry I can't participate. Dr. A. Unfortunately, If I click on the link I'll be banned again. Even though I have ban immunity for 30 days until the 26th and will use karma points to stay unbanned for the next 30 days - I'm still being banned. It really is frustrating.

I have to agree with those who say it's a broken scope.

If so I hope its not to expensive to repair.

(Short answer)

Two different stars are reflecting into the same image. Red and Blue.

Somewhat rare, with few hours on that web sight.

Usually red or blue, but a double from two separate stars, nice. I wondered what that would look like. :-)

Peace.

It's the first observed "perihelion passage" of a comet perhaps one named "1956b"? I could be off on the comet name because three were discovered in rapid succession in March of 1955.

Not Double image refraction but two separate images reflected through refraction onto each other.

EMI or Electromagnetic Interference would most likely be the cause of the image. If this is in fact the view from a radio telescope.

Allow me to clarify, there is a proper name for the thing that is causing it. Not just a name for the phenomenon in general, that's just what it is, but additionally there is a proper name for the thing that is causing it to happen in this specific case. Ideally you should have to find and refer to the original source material to confirm that part of the answer.

It's a reflection of light from near bright star in the telescope mirror. You can find such artifacts near almost every bright star
