Welfare lottery ban...NC residents upset

we had the same approach here in germany, but it was ruled as being wrong by a high court.
the reason was, it would be a discrimination to parts of the population. and it could have been the start of a 2 class society, where some people had less rights. this would be unconstitutional.

Oh yeah I can just see some hassled 7/11 clerk checking all that out, with ten impatient customers wanting to pay and get out of the place.

The legislation is currently being drafted and would see all lottery ticket merchants refusing to sell to individuals who receive government assistance or who are going through bankruptcy.

Yeah right? Would EBT card carriers have to get a special tattoo for identification?

people on welfare have debit cards and on wic ... that looks just like a large paper check
on the debit card it should be a ban to buy things like this

it should be for food and rent and electricity and water but some states pay that separately

so food and rent that is IT!

Besides how will they know we are spending our money on tickets? We dont use EBT to purchase. So tell me, how will they know how I spend my monthly check?

does it state that in legal terms somewhere in black and white?

It is easy to stop. Buy all they want, but you can't collect the prize. ID require and a check on a database would bring up a hit and prize confiscated to repay the welfare you recieved or prize collection denied. End of story.

Who they going to trust to go collect their prize/winnings?

Although I do know of a friend.who just collected on a lottery win for his sister and she gave him $700. She couldn't collect because she would lose her foodstamps and her portion of rent for section 8 would increase.

He told me he was issued a 1099 and it would be reported to the IRS, so he will pay the taxes on it. Thus the $700 payment he received for a $2500 prize. She gets $1800 in her pocket.

I'm undecided about this. If they are going to ban people on welfare from buying lottery tickets, then why not ban them from buying other wasteful/harmful stuff such as booze, smoking, etc as well?

It won't work. The only way to stop taxpayer funding of free booze, smokes and Escalades is to stop refilling those EBT cards. Cutting off the Welfare is the only way. As long as we're giving them money in any form, the abuse will continue.

The DHS has a ledger and database for anyone who receives government aid.

Yes indeed..if a win is big enough to report taxes DSS will be looking for some dough. Most just have someone else turn the ticket in.

Technically if you are getting cash assistance you can do whatever you want with it. Once you get your cash out of the ATM there's no way to tell what one is spending money on.

Tack up another use for drones.

The 35k drones that were released this summer for the various police departments. They have a purpose. Which is to monitor. Is it too much to believe they'll be monitoring ATM machines?

Don't know what the big deal is the money just going back to the goverment to pay for schooling

First of all, the state or the county needs to take said welfare benefits and use it to pay each recipients rent and lights or gas for their heat. That way they know the money is being put to good use,period.

They already take the low income Energy Assistance checks that ppl get and put it towards their lights or gas bill to keep lights and heat on. They started doing this a couple yrs ago. I think it's a good idea.

They should never see a dime of that money but they could be mailed receipts saying that such and such bill has been paid and they are current.

If Tyron wants lottery tickets, smokes and booze, then he needs to get a job and pay for it out of his own hard earned money. It is not the tax payers responsibility to pay for your lifestyle.
