Let us look at AFRICOM as this is the next and present area of military conflict. You need the ability to quickly establish airheads. To do this you need carrier based battle groups. If carriers are now more easy to target in the littorals, as the Chinese test demonstrated could be done by Third World or terrorist, then the United States ability to project military power has diminished.
