Hei K. Kool-

One day I'll visit Australia... it's been calling me for awhile now.
Has the heatwave abated somewhat? We've just experienced record breaking lows here in mid Can. -36c the other night. Two extremes on opposite sides of the globe.

A most beautiful Australia Day to you-

Hei hei.

Over the past 17 years of my working life I have experienced Australia Day in a totally different light to what most Ozies would. I have seen the down side of a
'culture' (i use the term loosely) of beer drinking. I personaly think that it is just a way to mask what is a culture of alcoholism which starts at a young age. Australia day has always been a day I dread because of stupid few in our society who like get pissed and use it as an excuse to act like violent cowards.
Of course there are all the other issues we face. You know over population of cities, the slow death of country towns, and economy reliant on mining and housing and soon on Black gold I hear. Can hardly wait to see what they do to the environment when they start exploiting that.
I skip a few of course. And of course then there is native population issues which are not being addressed. Yes Asutralia we have a lot to celebrate as a nation. But before we celebrate maybe we should actually do something about the issues facing us.
Australia day is a celebration in mediocrity.

youre very right about the alcohol issue. Its something aussies dont address because nearly the whole population are'proud drinkers',most of our holidays are really excuses to drink. To me Australia day means avoiding people who are pissed, having bbqs and smearing their faces with green and gold zinc cream so they look the part whilst 'enjoying'drunken antics.
i obviously dont drink.

I hope you do, and if you do, look me up so I can tick off one of my must-do's before I die, meet a glp'er :)

Tervetuloa ;)

Strangely, yours is the only positive comment on this day of celebrations, wtf is going on with my fellow Aussies?

There's been calls to re-name our day "Citizen's Day"

UGH

Aboriginal Australians have a lot to celebrate too, and most of the real ones, with a true Aussie spirit, do so.

No heat wave in the west anymore, perfect sunny weather

Back then it wasn't Australia Day, celebrating what we have today as a whole Australian culture would go more towards
our unity, than the continued divisiveness of refusing to acknowledge who we are today and how far we have come, despite all that is still waiting to be acomplished.

All today I've been conducting a poll with people (read: drunken dipshits) in the streets of this town, asking them if they actually know what the date of January 26th signifies in the history of this country.

I've been doing this to reiterate to myself what a clueless bunch of wankers the majority of Australians are.

Do you know all you Aussies on GLP? Without resort to a google search that is?

I'm interested to see if the basic intelligence level of Aussie GLPers is a cut above the previously mentioned drunken BBQ having "oi oi oi" crowd waving flags and spewing shit they know nothing about.

January 26th was the date Captain James Cook sailed into Botany Bay (Sydney). I am part Aboriginal and neither myself nor any of my family thinks of it as invasion day. There are actually a lot of Australia Day parties going on in many aboriginal areas today. It is a great day for reconciliation.

As for the 'Citizen's Day' hoax it is just that. Some stupid troll put it out on Facebook and sat back to watch all the idiot racists to come out all guns blazing. He is sitting there laughing at your expense, so if you are going to get angry at anybody be angry at him. Nobody ever wanted to change the name in the first place and if you had half a brain you would realise that.

So it's ok with you that today, your Aboriginal culture and traditions is almost completely wiped out?

The destruction of both the Aboriginals lives, land, and culture, started when James Cook sailed into Botany Bay on the 26th of January 1788, 225 years ago. Edit: It was Arthur Phillip who set up the first British Colony on Australian land on the 26th of January 1788, not James Cook.

As an Aboriginal, you find that something worth celebrating?

I'm flabbergasted.

I liken you to an Australian that would celebrate the anniversary when the Chinese or the Pakistani invaded and conquered Australia and forced their culture and beliefs on Australians.
