Re: Happy Australia Day!!
My Aboriginality obviously bothers some people. My family are educated and many of us have worked within the community to help our people help themselves. I didnt go to Uni, just as far as year 10 high school, but my son is now studying, and i am a very proud mum. My Mum wasn't even allowed to legally vote until i was 3. Getting angry isn't going to help anyone, besides, nobody alive today committed any of those atrocities. Should I hate my white ancestors for what they did to my black ancestors?

As for the word Aboriginal, I am aware that its meaning is 'Native' so traditional Australian Aboriginal would probably be the best and most accurate term for us black fellas. But hey, who has time to say that. I grew up in the 70's, so I'm just glad I don't get called an Abo now.

January 26th was the date Captain James Cook sailed into Botany Bay (Sydney). I am part Aboriginal and neither myself nor any of my family thinks of it as invasion day. There are actually a lot of Australia Day parties going on in many aboriginal areas today. It is a great day for reconciliation.

As for the 'Citizen's Day' hoax it is just that. Some stupid troll put it out on Facebook and sat back to watch all the idiot racists to come out all guns blazing. He is sitting there laughing at your expense, so if you are going to get angry at anybody be angry at him. Nobody ever wanted to change the name in the first place and if you had half a brain you would realise that.

Hei K. Kool-

One day I'll visit Australia... it's been calling me for awhile now.
Has the heatwave abated somewhat? We've just experienced record breaking lows here in mid Can. -36c the other night. Two extremes on opposite sides of the globe.

A most beautiful Australia Day to you-

Hei hei.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17743321

I hope you do, and if you do, look me up so I can tick off one of my must-do's before I die, meet a glp'er :)

Tervetuloa ;)

Strangely, yours is the only positive comment on this day of celebrations, wtf is going on with my fellow Aussies?

There's been calls to re-name our day "Citizen's Day"

UGH

Aboriginal Australians have a lot to celebrate too, and most of the real ones, with a true Aussie spirit, do so.

No heat wave in the west anymore, perfect sunny weather

I'm saying that the time for being angry about the white Australia policy is past. Now is time for true reconciliation. Look at the community worker Australian of the year. His acceptance speech was fantastic. He accepted the award not as a black man, but as part of a community working together with the police in Redfern.

Not to mention the Young Australian of the Year who was originally from Afganistan, arrived here aged 11 and now about to finish a triple degree, spend a lot of time and effort working with Aboriginal kids in Northern WA.

We are a brilliant country when we all work together. There is pretty much nothing we can't achieve.

People here dissed me because I said I'm part Aboriginal and didn't want to buy into the whole invasion day thing. That day has passed. As I said previously, the time for anger has passed. Now is the time to move forward TOGETHER.

I also love being an Aussie and wouldn't want to have been born anywhere else. To paraphrase the Young Aussie 'the Dreaming is still going on, and now we can all be in it together'.

They celebrate the British colonising the land that they now live on. They celebrate the British giving them freedom and beautiful land properties.

What they fail to recognise is that this land was never the British's to give away. People were already living on it. But being the self-righteous bigots they were, they saw Aboriginals as sub-humans who didn't deserve the same rights as their own people.

This ideology is still carried on today. Disgusting.

So it's ok with you that today, your Aboriginal culture and traditions is almost completely wiped out?

The destruction of both the Aboriginals lives, land, and culture, started when James Cook sailed into Botany Bay on the 26th of January 1788, 225 years ago.

As an Aboriginal, you find that something worth celebrating?

I'm flabbergasted.

I liken you to an Australian that would celebrate the anniversary when the Chinese or the Pakistani invaded and conquered Australia and forced their culture and beliefs on Australians.

I am very aware of my culture thank you very much. My mother needed a blood transfusion when I was born and the hospital wouldn't give it to her until they got my father to give permission as he 'guardian'! I worked at the Aboriginal Legal Service in Redfern during the Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody. I have seen things that someone like you would probably have run from.

We don't need white activists to fight for us and we don't want you to. We are just better at picking our battles. You are a disgrace and don't even try to speak for me or any of mine. The only way ahead is to work together. Divisiveness is one of the only things I don't like about this country. You think you are doing the Koori cause any good with anger?
