Re: Happy Australia Day!!
Over the past 17 years of my working life I have experienced Australia Day in a totally different light to what most Ozies would. I have seen the down side of a
'culture' (i use the term loosely) of beer drinking. I personaly think that it is just a way to mask what is a culture of alcoholism which starts at a young age. Australia day has always been a day I dread because of stupid few in our society who like get pissed and use it as an excuse to act like violent cowards.
Of course there are all the other issues we face. You know over population of cities, the slow death of country towns, and economy reliant on mining and housing and soon on Black gold I hear. Can hardly wait to see what they do to the environment when they start exploiting that.
I skip a few of course. And of course then there is native population issues which are not being addressed. Yes Asutralia we have a lot to celebrate as a nation. But before we celebrate maybe we should actually do something about the issues facing us.
Australia day is a celebration in mediocrity.
 Quoting: Ozi dude 32959057

Something that made my guts turn was what I saw on ANZAC day;
a whole heap of young guys in military uniforms & medals getting blotto in the 'spirit' of the day.

It was like the type of thing you see on Melbourne cup day, everybody wearing weird hats that their grandfather would have worn for the spirit of the day. But that was horse-race day, not mourn our fallen soldiers day. It really looked pathetic to me.

This country really needs to grow up &: in Nietzsche's words, re-value all values.

People like you, ruin everything for the righteous Aboriginal protests. You probably have no grasp of what your Aboriginal culture is about or how important it is. I'm not even Aboriginal and understand their struggles and how it was unjust of the British colonising this land. Nothing to celebrate.

I am very aware of my culture thank you very much. My mother needed a blood transfusion when I was born and the hospital wouldn't give it to her until they got my father to give permission as he 'guardian'! I worked at the Aboriginal Legal Service in Redfern during the Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody. I have seen things that someone like you would probably have run from.

We don't need white activists to fight for us and we don't want you to. We are just better at picking our battles. You are a disgrace and don't even try to speak for me or any of mine. The only way ahead is to work together. Divisiveness is one of the only things I don't like about this country. You think you are doing the Koori cause any good with anger?

January 26th was the date Captain James Cook sailed into Botany Bay (Sydney). I am part Aboriginal and neither myself nor any of my family thinks of it as invasion day. There are actually a lot of Australia Day parties going on in many aboriginal areas today. It is a great day for reconciliation.

As for the 'Citizen's Day' hoax it is just that. Some stupid troll put it out on Facebook and sat back to watch all the idiot racists to come out all guns blazing. He is sitting there laughing at your expense, so if you are going to get angry at anybody be angry at him. Nobody ever wanted to change the name in the first place and if you had half a brain you would realise that.

My Aboriginality obviously bothers some people. My family are educated and many of us have worked within the community to help our people help themselves. I didnt go to Uni, just as far as year 10 high school, but my son is now studying, and i am a very proud mum. My Mum wasn't even allowed to legally vote until i was 3. Getting angry isn't going to help anyone, besides, nobody alive today committed any of those atrocities. Should I hate my white ancestors for what they did to my black ancestors?

As for the word Aboriginal, I am aware that its meaning is 'Native' so traditional Australian Aboriginal would probably be the best and most accurate term for us black fellas. But hey, who has time to say that. I grew up in the 70's, so I'm just glad I don't get called an Abo now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16431660

I'm not aboriginal, my family migrated from Scotland as 'Ten-pound poms,' but the suburb we lived in had a lot of aboriginal families & I am in good stead with a lot of aboriginal people (compared to the slums of Glasgow, the less affluent suburbs of Adelaide were like fucking Shagri-la!)

My heart goes out to the troubled nunga people here, they are the most train-wreck people I've ever experienced. Most of the guys & girls I grew up with are either dead or very troubled. One guy I knew became a lawyer!

Good on you for breaking free from the trouble that white civilization has brought your beautiful people.

I'm not talking about urbanised Aboriginal "culture", I'm talking about the raw traditional Aboriginal culture. The traditional songs, dances, customs, and thousands of years of history, that now after British colonisation, the majority of Aboriginals have lost. It's terribly, terribly sad.

You as an Aboriginal person, have to continue fighting for your land and the preservation of your traditional Aboriginal culture. There is a huge crowd that supports your righteous movements, of all nations and races.

Righteous anger is righteous. But do something with your anger. Don't kill people, fight for your rights in a peaceful manner like Gandhi did.

Re: Happy Australia Day!!
All today I've been conducting a poll with people (read: drunken dipshits) in the streets of this town, asking them if they actually know what the date of January 26th signifies in the history of this country.

I've been doing this to reiterate to myself what a clueless bunch of wankers the majority of Australians are.

Do you know all you Aussies on GLP? Without resort to a google search that is?

I'm interested to see if the basic intelligence level of Aussie GLPers is a cut above the previously mentioned drunken BBQ having "oi oi oi" crowd waving flags and spewing shit they know nothing about.

I do love this country. It's the people I've got a problem with. Especially the white, reactionary retards like yourself.

If it weren't for the white folks, how would the Aboriginals have heard the Word of God?
