I know. Too many people here seem to think that residing in a country = being a citizen of that country.

It's very annoying when one is an American citizen posting from abroad and constantly being told that US affairs are none of their business by idiots who don't seem to understand that the flag next to the post only reveals the poster's location, not the poster's nationality.

It was probably for tax purposes.

The USA and Libya are the only two countries on earth that require their citizens to pay income taxes while living abroad.

Tax treaties help a little, but an American can still end up being double taxed by both the USA and the foreign country where they have residency.

Many American expatriates renounce their US citizenship so that they don't have to keep paying taxes to two countries.

why opinionate about things you know nothing about? I'll be renouncing in a month. No loss...
