Look at it this way. An "idiot" truck driver who dropped out of high school at 17 gets his CDL and makes $30k his first year. After switching companies after a couple of years, he is now making $40k at the age of 19. He then gets a job in the oilfields and boosts his earnings to $60k-$80k per year, by the age of 21.

Meanwhile, his "smart" friend goes to college, racks up $60k in debt, and graduates with his fancy degree only to get a job paying $35k per year at the age of 21 (the same age as the "idiot" truck driver). It will take him 10 years to pay off his massive student debt. He is unable to save any of his paycheck while the "idiot" debt-free truck driver has been able to steadily invest a good half of his $80k salary for all of that time.

Not tell me, who is the smart one and who is the dummy?

Re: Would you date or marry someone without a college education?
Intelligence and Curiosity are MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than a
Sheepskin in a frame on the wall.

I have a couple of advanced degrees and the absolute BEST WOMEN I ever dated from both a niceness of personality, informed about the world, and curious about everything, were women who did NOT have college degrees. They were also SMARTER (ie: raw brainpower) than most of the "College Degreed" women that I have dated (not all, but most).

My advice is that instead of saying one won't marry someone with a college degree is instead to NOT DATE Academic Phd types or women who are Super Competitive. Those women NEVER have a marriage that lasts ... and go through a succession of relationships leaving damage and destruction in their wake.

I would never date a guy that had a smelly job, like a garbage man, fisherman or town sewer worker. I have an overly sensitive sense to smell and even the slightest of bad odors bother me.

Re: Would you date or marry someone without a college education?
I'd prefer a college degree, so I gotta go with no, probabably, since I don't really believe in marriage and it would take a hell of a guy to convert me to the thought. Brains are important.

These days there are a lot of dummies without any common sense getting college degrees and putting themselves in quite a bit of debt. Then they find they can't get a job. So a college degree does not mean one is smart. It can mean quite the opposite. There are very successful and smart people who didn't even receive their high school diploma let alone a college degree. I'd say get to know the person first and their interests without getting hung up on degrees or lack of them.

Then you should live alone. No spouse and especially no kids. No animals either. And this isn't being rude. It is just telling you the truth. You will live a happier life.

There are a lot of good points on this thread, in both directions.

I think we tend to mate with people who are in our same socio-economic circle.

With that being said, I expect the same calibur of professional success, as I myself have, in a sig other. Whether this requires a degree due to the nature or field of their occupation, then so be it or not.

Op,

You are correct it is a shallow basis without considering goals and opportunities as neither my husband nor me had a college education when we met and married however, we slowly worked our way through college and in my opinion, it is about setting goals and working towards them.

An education without ambition and life goals is a useless endeavor as expecting success is futile as nothing is handed to you regardless of your education credentials.

Oh, I married a great smelling guy! My point was, I would never date/marry someone who worked in a smelly environment. The jobs I mentioned have odors that don't shower off easily.

Yes, socioeconomic circles are important. you will inevitably grow apart and lose interest in someone who is below the level you are accustomed to living at.
