anyone have ideas on a good brand of nutritious & affordable dog food?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7632532

Try a feed store. Dutch's brand dog food has NO CORN OR SOY --uses sorghum as filler, which is not all that nutritious but not harmful. Contains vitamins etc.

This is an inexpensive dog food and feed stores usually have some decent foods for much less than pet stores or grocery stores. Call some & ask.

We used to feed our dog Beneful when we first got him. He had a weird odor, not a doggy smell, but whatever it was was strong and yucky. I did some research and decided to switch his food. Within a week of switching to "Just 6" (Rachel Ray's brand), the odor went away. Beneful is loaded with corn, which dogs neither need, or in my dog's case, even like. For instance, my dog loves a snack once in a while, but if I'm eating corn chips, he doesn't even bother to try to get one. His coat is beautiful and he's a happy pup.

Since our dog refuses to eat any dog food (canned or dry) we feed it raw stew meat and cooked eggs.

its easy to blame the companies making food for people that imprison animals, but hey look in the mirror you might see the real problem.

Imprison? Dogs have only been scavenging from humans for 10000+ years or so in exchange for guarding our groups by just being themselves. I would think there on the winning side of this equation.

Thank you very much for posting this, OP! My brother feeds this to his terrier for daily kibble and when I told him, he said the dog has been ill for the past two months! Beneful was brought into the house for the first time in September!

Thanks again for the heads-up, I will tell all pet owners I know.

Wow! Thanks for sharing OP.

Funny thing, did a late night run to the grocery the other day specially to buy this dog food, but standing in the aisle I couldn't make myself buy it. Instead I bought a pack of chicken thighs and some rice and made my dog's food.

Guess I had a handy psychic moment - thank Goodness!

I pay more for my for my dogs food, but it's worth it because in the long run they are going to be much healthier and the vet bill will hopefuly be much smaller. When I wised up and changed my maltese's food to grainfree, his skin and allergy problem was gone in DAYS! His coat is shiney and beautiful too. I got my new puppy in October and I put her directly on grainfree adult food, aside from the normal puppy worms, she is a healthy, happy, drive you nuts puppy. I use Blue Buffalo, because that is what helped my first dog.

KIBBLE = Killer, Ingredients, Bad Breath & Less Energy!

Best diet for a dog or cat is raw meat. They have only been eating kibble for 100 years, they evolved eating raw meat.

I changed my dogs over last June, the difference was incredible. They lost all there body fat, have more energy & do not scratch so much. It cut what I pick up after them by about 2/3. I was fortunate 2 find a company that supplies the zoo's with meat, I get a 50# box of meat for $30 & chicken for $25. U may b able 2 find a source like this in ur area.

The next best diet is a cooked meat diet. I also feed them a kibble that is 70% freeze dried meat & 30% vegetable's. The makers of dog food r not required 2 say how much meat is actually in the kibble.

 Quoting: TTX8K82

My dogs like kibble as a snack. Cat food too. But their main diet is cooked meat. They like people food. I try to keep their meals lean but meaty. They get some fat too but not much. They're little dogs (havanese and Chihuahua). They're very happy, healthy and active. I love my dogs. They're excellent friends of mine. I always try to be the best friend I can be to them too.
 Quoting: simultaneous_final

Bingo! The old saying "You are what you eat" applies to our 4 legged friends too.

My dogs eat just about everything. Since the time they were pups, I've always kept a full bowl of kibble in the kitchen which allows them to eat whenever they want. They were raised not having to worry about when they would get their next meal so they eat only when they are hungry and never overeat. I feed Orijen regional red kibble.

[link to www.orijen.ca]

Their main meal is whatever I have feel like making for them. Some days its raw beef, liver, veg, yogurt, etc. Other days its boiled chicken, sweet potatoes, peas, eggs, etc. For snacks they get fresh carrots, apples, and raw beef beef bones to keep their teeth clean.

They go to a Holistic Vet (20 year traditional A&M vet) who turned to the dark side and decided to really help animals instead of giving them pills all their life for conditions that can be controlled/cured with food and herbs.

I'm blessed that I can afford to feed my dogs good food. If they day comes that I can't afford fresh meat, I guess the dogs and I will have to go hunting. LOL

This is not the first time Purina Beneful brands have made dogs sick. Back in 2006-07, dogs were getting sick from this stuff. Well, it's happening again. And dogs are even dying. Still no recall from FDA.

LINK TO FULL ARTICLE:

[link to www.examiner.com]

QUOTED FROM ARTICLE (in accordance with GLP's policy):

"Beneful dog food is a popular brand. Unfortunately over the last two to three months, pet owners have seen their dogs become ill after eating this food, based on reports on the Consumer Affairs website. Some pets are more sensitive than others, and their symptoms can include any of the following, sometimes more than one:

Vomiting
Diarrhea
Excessive water drinking
Lethargy
Weight loss
Seizures
Bloat (this is life threatening to a dog)
Kidney failure
Liver failure
Death

Although Beneful comes in several types of food from puppy, to active and healthy weight, it appears the problem is broader than one type of food. Reports have included Beneful's Healthy Radiance, Healthy Weight, and Playful Life, while other reports did not indicate what type of Beneful was fed...

*snip*

... This problem is not in a single region but across the country (USA). The number of reported cases, mainly from October 2012 through January 2013, has been increasing and currently there are 220 incidents listed on the consumer affairs site alone. With pets dying after eating this food, the following questions must be asked.

Is Purina turning a blind eye to what their Beneful product is doing?

Why has there been no recall or statement issued by the FDA?"

DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG THIS SHIT!!!

We used to give Purina to our dog back in the early 90's. It was at that time, the vet told us how bad Purina is, and what was in it ... He basically told us we were killing our dog slowly by giving him Purina, anything.

This food has been on the dangerous list for ages now.

After the vet told us this way back then.. I have never given any of my pets Purina foods, or any store bought brands foods.

It may cost a bit more, but they only get the best. In the end they are worth it.

Our vet was afraid she would get sued if she told us how bad some dog foods are. She suggested we google the name brand and the word "lawsuit". I was shocked.

We lost 2 dogs to Cushing's disease and 2 to bone cancer. Our new dogs eat organic & I cook for them. I have no vet bills now.

Crap food.

Love how all these foods are like human food.

Corn
berry's
wheat
rice
potatoes
carrots
Plus poison chemicals.

Cats and dogs don't eat this shit.

To watch the commercials, you'd think that Beneful is the greatest shit ever!

What they don't tell you is that Beneful has a LONG history of making dogs sick.
 Quoting: simultaneous_final

I had a min pin she was 3 years old and always had tummy issues throwing up off and on for 2 years, the vet never said anything, we fed her Beneful Playful Life for over 2 years. Not knowing and i now i feel awful, i thought it was a good dog food. About 8 months ago she had a seizure one morning, we took her to the vet paid 500$ they gave her anti-seizure meds and said to bring her back in 1 week, that afternoon she had 7 more it was so sad and awful, she had brain damage, and we had to have her put to sleep. I miss my baby Daisy so much, she was the best dog. Now i know, i gotta pitt bull now she eats the best food i can buy her.. Just wanted to share my story....

Veterinarians are only required FOUR hours of nutrition classes.

ANY vet that sells Science Diet is clueless and a sign that you can't trust them. They don't eve pay for what they sell. It's free and all profit for them.

Beneful has a picture of CORN right on the front of the package. CORN! The worst thing you can feed a dog! Their intestinal tracts are too short and they can't digest it. It's nothing but filler, like ALL grains in dog food. PLUS it's the most common thing dogs are allergic to. Corn is also one of the first ingredients in Science Diet. Dogs CANNOT digest grains.

ANY AND ALL dog food you buy in a grocery store is BAD! Ethoxyquin (from Monsanto) is one of the most widely used preservatives in dog food. It's also used in pesticides and rubber processing. Not legal to add directly to the food, but when a dog food producer here buys fish or any meat meal from China, it's already in it. From there they make the kibble and don't have to list it as an ingredient.

The more you spend on REAL quality food (there's a huge trend towards healthier pet foods that can be sorted out by using the internet), the less you spend at the vet and longer and healthier your dog, or cat lives.

I've worked in the dog business for 14 years now. Police K-9's, assistance and therapy dogs, search and rescue/recovery dogs and a lot of family pets. I work with 450 to 600 canines a month of every size, age, temperament and health condition you can think of. And seen the results of different diets, too.

Garbage in, garbage out. And anything and everything that Purina has to do with is pure poison from cheap resources in China. Purina also does the most, and the most sadistic animal testing of any pet food company out there.

They are doing the same to humans, its called aspartame

Look how many fat women complaining of every single physical ailment known to man guzzles her diet coke or pepsi..

I know of women that wake up first thing in the morning needing their diet coke while complaining of the dizziness and shooting pains going down their leg.

Aspartame is a bio weapon, poison and people drink it up like theres no tomorrow.

I just put down my 8 yr. old German Shepherd 2 days ago. She has no seizures...and was NOT on Beneful. She had many of the symptoms stated. All dry foods should be suspect unless the ingredients are meat/veggies. Even those should not have corn or soy. The GMO,s are getting to our pets this way. Ultimately, she developed a growth on her front elbow and could not walk. The pain meds had side effects. The x-ray showed a "shattered" joint. From the lst limp to her demise was 3 WEEKS.

First, OP, thank you so much for posting this. We've been giving our 2 dogs Beneful for years now.

Over the past 2 weeks our 11 yr old boxer/pitt mix has been pissing all over the place. She always enjoyed a large bowl of ice cold water a few times a day, but lately she's been looking for water constantly, and drinking out of our other dog's bowl. Since 2 weeks ago she stopped coming upstairs to sleep in our room and has stayed downstairs by herself in the back room. That goes against her instinct to protect her family. I also have been giving her Vetri-science Lab "UT Strength Canine" product which seemed to help a bit. I've made her organic juice with carrots, apples and cilantro(cilantro is a natural chelator) and noticed that was good for her on those days, but then she just went back to being a bit lethargic during the days.

Since our vet apt is in 2 weeks (we're hoping they can get us in earlier) I'll keep you all posted. She recently got a 2" round lump in her lower stomach area. I can't believe I've been poisoning my best friend all this time with food I thought was good for her, well, as far as dog food goes. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this issue. I know 11 in doggie years may seem old but she used to run around like a puppy with our 5 yr old little dog all day long outside (we're on an acre) so when she suddenly stopped her normal activities we were a bit baffled. Now I know Beneful is to blame so thank you once again OP.

Wow. Thank you OP. I have a similar experience to this poster. My Pit has started pissing in the house the last few weeks too. Right after coming inside even. Also, about 2-3 weeks ago he started having the diarrhea. He was kinda lethargic for a few days too. Not anything serious, but notable. Come to think of it, this was around the time he was finishing off a bag of this food. He's fine now, except the pissing in the house part. Also, my wife's wiener dog, won't eat the soft red chunks in the food. She picks them out. We just thought it was her being picky.
I started giving my last Pit this food because of the soft chunks. He was old and a rescue that didn't have the best teeth. He seemed to do fine with it.

Gotta run now. Time to throw that shit out. Gonna go back to the Nuttro stuff I gave my first Pit when I first got him. $50 for a 30lb bag. Expensive, but wtf was I thinking? This is my kid!? I'm ashamed....
