The amounts of BPA they expose the rats to is ridiculous. Anyone here boil 5 liters of water a day and then drink it from a Nalgene PC bottle? I can make ANYTHING toxic or dangerous if I give enough of it to an organism. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30688956 I work in materials science research and have worked with BPA many times. Of all the things in plastic, it's one of the last I'd worry about. BPA is being targeted because it's so common, it's a lawyer's dream because they can sue anyone and everyone. The replacement containers, like LDPE, have anti-oxidating chemicals to stabilize the plastic during processing so it doesn't degrade. Those are far more concerning to me than BPA. The average person slept through high school chemistry but suddenly "knows" something is bad for them because the media told them so. Talk about sheeple....... the soft plastics that they are using in soda cups these days create a very distinct taste in the drinks..you can taste the 'plastic' easily. The FDA has said it will decide by March 31 whether BPA should be banned from all U.S. food and beverage packaging â not because of the French ban, which will make exports of U.S. products such as meats, juices and frozen seafood problematic, but because of a 2008 lawsuit filed against the FDA by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The NRDC filed a petition with the FDA, asking it to ban the use of BPA in food packaging. According to the NRDC, the FDA, which is legally mandated to respond to written petitions within 180 days, ignored the petition, prompting the NRDC to file a suit, requiring it to respond. âNow, the FDA has agreed to give us an answer â 41 months after the petition was filed,â the NRDCâs Sarah Janssen wrote in a Dec. blog post. After baby bottles warmed in microwaves were found to release BPA into infantsâ milk, the chemical was banned from bottles by the European Union and Turkey, among other countries, in 2008. Canada had already banned BPA in bottles in 2007. Denmark has banned BPA in all baby food products, and the entire Japanese canning industry has replaced its BPA resin can liners. The U.S., however, still allows BPA in baby bottles, though Minnesota, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Washington, Maryland, Vermont and New York have enacted state-level regulations against it. Colorado is working on it. While a desire to protect the most vulnerable Americans â infants â hasnât been motivation enough for the FDA, hopefully money will be. The market for Floridaâs juices to France alone is worth $21 million annually. A Feb. 6 USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report on the potential impact of the French ban on U.S. exports explains that BPA works to strengthen plastics, is used as a resin to protect metal containers from corrosion, and is used on the metal lids of glass jars. Two companies, Dow Chemical and Bayar AC, produce âthe bulk of BPA in world,â says the USDA report, and it estimates that âmost if not all canned drinks, canned foods as well as many drinks and food in plastic containers are in contact with BPA.â Products primarily affected by the ban, it adds: ⦠will be beverages, notably the Florida orange and grapefruit juice using plastic container; France is the second largest market for Florida juices with 21 million dollars sales. [sic] Imported beer will also be targeted by this action. In addition, any product that contains a plastic packaging or a plastic component may be affected by this law. Frozen seafood and meat products are most likely using BPA in their packaging, as well as packers for bulk dried fruit and dried legume. That means to say that it affects the majority of the manufactured, frozen and fresh products. [link to www.forbes.com] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 33509414 Romania 02/02/2013 06:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The gender the politicians, Hollywood, and the media use as the ideal person has changed from someone who is a strong moral male to a submissive female personality. They portray strong men as ignorant brutish bullies, while the 'educated' and 'enlightened' male is shown as someone who is sensitive and nurturing, even openly homosexual. This is part of their agenda in the takeover of the west. A 'mature' adult nowadays is seen as someone in a feminine image. This feminization process manifests itself in myriad of ways. Consider child discipline. Only 20 years ago, the best way to discipline your child was to punish them in one way or another. Today it's ("Spare the rod, spoil the child."), spanking is considered child abuse, and the norm seems to be a quiet talking to, followed by tickets to the cinema. No wonder then we are living in a world where people are losing the sight of what's wrong and what's right. All these attitudes have brought about stupendously horrible consequences. The soaring drug use, crime, and welfare dependency are the result, the list goes on. This process of femininization manifests itself, though somewhat differently, when you turn on the TV or watch a movie. Throughout the mid-twentieth century, leading men were, as a rule, infallible: But no longer. In family comedy, the father figure has metamorphosed from the all-knowing, all-wise, to the consistent stupidity of Homer Simpson. Commercially successful movies now often feature women who are physically aggressive, who dominate or at least upstage the men. In today's cinema, most of the leading women are strong, and most of the leading men are pretty boys. A transformation of comparable magnitude seems to be under way in the political arena. The feminine way of seeing the world and its problems has becoming the mainstream way. There has been fundamental changes in American culture over the past fifty years, a shift from a male-dominated culture to a feminine and androgynous society. The question is, what's causing this shift, and why? Today, women must be appeased and catered to. They are the heads of businesses, and the heads of their homes. They dictate their children's upbringing (which explains why many of them grow up undisciplined and spoiled, by the way) and have the final word on virtually all family decisions. Such a phenomenon is the sign of a nation in trouble. Men have abandoned their responsibilities of leadership, and our nation is going down the tubes because of it. In the black community, the vast majority of children are being raised without a father. The white community is not far behind. Furthermore, in those homes where fathers do exist, they are largely detached and provide no real influence. Mom is in charge, and everybody in the household knows it. It was not always this way, however. There was a time in this nation when rugged men taught their sons the qualities of manhood. "Soccer Moms" have replaced disciplinarian dads. Then again, there was a time when a man's primary interest was not in guzzling a pack of Budweiser and sitting all evening in front of the "boob tube" while ignoring virtually everyone in the house. There was a time when men taught their children the fundamental values of honesty and integrity. Believe it or not, there was a time in America when men took pride in being the spiritual heads of their homes. They actually knew how to balance a checkbook and how to read a Good Book. They were the kind of men that women loved and children respected. However, the feminization of America is so complete, so thorough, that I am not certain if, masculine men are even desirable anymore? AN INTERESTING OBSERVATION: It makes me laugh, all the hippies, environmentalists, vegans, and health nuts consuming ''ORGANIC'' products that are sold in PLASTIC CONTAINERS! The University of Rochester team's latest work adds to concerns about the safety of phthalates, found in vinyl flooring and PVC shower curtains. The findings are reported in the International Journal of Andrology. Plastic furniture Phthalates have the ability to disrupt hormones, and have been banned in toys in the EU for some years. However, they are still widely used in many different household items, including plastic furniture and packaging. The same researchers have already shown that this can mean boys are born with genital abnormalities. Now they say certain phthalates also impact on the developing brain, by knocking out the action of the male hormone testosterone. Dr Shanna Swan and her team tested urine samples from mothers over midway through pregnancy for traces of phthalates. The women, who gave birth to 74 boys and 71 girls, were followed up when their children were aged four to seven and asked about the toys the youngsters played with and the games they enjoyed. Girls' play They found that two phthalates DEHP and DBP can affect play behaviour. Boys exposed to high levels of these in the womb were less likely than other boys to play with cars, trains and guns or engage in "rougher" games like playfighting. Elizabeth Salter-Green, director of the chemicals campaign group CHEM Trust, said the results were worrying. "We now know that phthalates, to which we are all constantly exposed, are extremely worrying from a health perspective, leading to disruption of male reproduction health and, it appears, male behaviour too. "This feminising capacity of phthalates makes them true 'gender benders'." [link to news.bbc.co.uk] |

Higher levels have been found in milk and cheese. It can also leach into a liquid that comes in contact with the plastic; it extracts faster into nonpolar solvents (e.g. oils and fats in foods packed in PVC). DEHP was present in human adipose tissues from accident victims at a concentration of 0.3-1.0 ppm XLIII and in 48% of the adipose tissue specimens from cadavers autopsied in 1982 as part of the Human Adipose Tissue Survey from the National Human Monitoring Program. The liver, kidney, testes, and blood were identified as sites of DEHP metabolism. Studies show a possible increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier to DEHP in neonates or developing organisms. The first step in metabolism is the hydrolytic cleavage of DEHP resulting in the formation of MEHP and 2-ethylhexanol. The formation of MEHP from the parent ester is achieved by lipases that have been identified in the pancreas and intestinal mucosa, as well as the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin and plasma. After the primary metabolic conversions described above, the oxidized derivatives of MEHP can be conjugated with glucuronic acid for excretion. Approximately 65% of DEHP metabolites are excreted as glucuronide conjugates in humans. Metabolism following inhalation or dermal routes of exposure is expected to be similar to that after inhalation exposures, since there are lipases present in the alveolar cells of the lungs and the epidermis.
