FUCK YOU OBAMA! I own a gun for self-defense, not hunting, that means I want it to hold as many bullets as it can. The second amendment is NOT about "hunting." It's not even about self-defense, it's really simple you asshole, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The supreme court has already decided the matter, it is an individual right and you cannot ban an entire class of weapons that are commonly purchased for lawful uses. That includes "AR-15s" and "high capacity magazines."

He is not a dictator, it is not his job to "make the laws about this." It's the constitution and he will respect it. If he decides to issue executive orders in violation of the 2nd amendment we will not comply and the result will be anything but a reduction in violence.

The 2nd Amendment is very clear on this matter and the American People have spoken loud and clear how we feel about it by buying up every firearm and round of ammunition we can find.

Personally I love how he starts out with the assumption that any of his bill is worth passing and the only question is how much will be compromised on. To him the question is never whether or not to ban some guns or limit magazine size, the only question is which guns and how much. Those "evil conservatives" aren't willing to give up any guns or magazines, so they're terrible people for being "unwilling to compromise." The second amendment is non-negotiable. There shouldn't be ANY compromise anyway!

Closing the gun show loophole does have the support of the overwhelming majority of Americans, polls have even shown the majority of Republicans support the closing of the gun show loophole.

But for reasons the President explains, even that will have a hard time getting through the Republican controlled Congress.

When you are opposed to closing the gun show loophole, in effect, you are in support of violent convicted felons being able to obtain assault weapons, which they can do now by going to a gun show where there is no background check.

As someone who has never voted for a Republican or Democrat in my life, it seems clear to me where this is headed.

Because of the Republicans slavish devotion to the right of convicted felons to obtain assault weapons at gun shows without a background check, this will be the talking points that Democrats use to get Republicans butts kicked out of the majority in Congress in the 2014 elections. 2014, just 11 months away.

The President wouldn't be able to say Republicans are unwilling to compromise, if Republicans were willing to compromise on one thing, and you can't even deliver that.

That is neither the limit of his proposed legislation, nor does it matter to me. There is no such thing as a "gun show loophole." There is only the matter of private transfers and sales. If I want to sell a gun to my father or vice versa there should be no mandatory "background check" or other bullshit to go through.

If I knowingly sell it to a criminal, then I have committed a crime already. Gun shows are not the problem though, they account for an extreme minority of illegal weapons.

I posted on another tread regarding gun violence. Please please please let our President do his job! He's correct in saying that the republitards won't compromise. President Obama is suggesting that House Republicans on the issue of gun control appear neither willing to work with him nor listen to the American public on the issue.

“The House Republican majority is made up mostly of members who are in sharply gerrymandered districts that are very safely Republican and may not feel compelled to pay attention to broad-based public opinion, because what they're really concerned about is the opinions of their specific Republican constituencies,” the president said in an interview with The New Republic.

Obama also said he can get 50 percent of public support for many of his upcoming initiatives, but “I can't get enough votes out of the House of Representatives to actually get something passed. … I think there is still shock on the part of some in the party that I won re-election.”

The president said he has a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that date back for generations.

He said that moving forward on the topic means understanding that the realities of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas.

He said it's understandable that people are protective of their family traditions when it comes to hunting so “gun-control advocates also need to do “a little more listening than they do sometimes” in the debate.

The interview appears in the Feb. 11 issue of The New Republic.

Obama also said one of the biggest factors in the gun-control debate will be how it is shaped by the media.

“If a Republican member of Congress is not punished on Fox News or by Rush Limbaugh for working with a Democrat on a bill of common interest, then you’ll see more of them doing it,” he said. “I think John Boehner genuinely wanted to get a deal done, but it was hard to do in part because his caucus is more conservative probably than most Republican leaders are, and partly because he is vulnerable to attack for compromising Republican principles and working with Obama.”

The president argued that “the more left-leaning media outlets recognize that compromise is not a dirty word” and that party leaders, including Senate Majority Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, are “willing to buck the more absolutist-wing elements in our party to try to get stuff done.”
