Haha you basically listed my whole interest area ^^ Im very interested in the limbic system. That and brain plasticity.

If you havent seen anything from Robert Sapolsky you really should ^^

Im still trying to understand all the implications of 'The Measurement Problem'. It'll likely take a while. :)

Neuroprosthetics is interesting, but theres something too unhuman about it for me :P Theres a fine line somewhere atleast hehe ^^

Yes the grant was for research funding. I'm starting a new postdoc in April and this would provide me with up to three years of funding (fingers crossed, its pretty competitive). We are looking at how communication signals are encoded (detected and discriminated) in sensory pathways. We are trying to understand how populations of neurons encode behaviourally-relevant information in an efficient manner to extract relevant stimulus features.

WRT neuroprosthetics: these devices can be used to help people with sensory and motor deficits. There are sensory neuroprosthetic devices that help people hear or see. Motor neuroprosthetics are used to help people with paralysis or other motor impairments, to move limbs or operate computer cursors or keyboards with their thoughts (motor command intentions). If we understand how neural computations/mechanisms encode stimulus features (and information in general) better, we can improve the performance/resolution of these devices, and the people who use them could have better vision, hearing, or motor control.

I'm just getting into this area of research, and I might be a little biased, but I think its pretty great. :)
