1st time with psoriasis, age 51
From what I have read so far, this is usually diagnosed younger. Why would I be having my first bout at this age?
Its the back of my neck and under my hair.

Thanks for the vinegar tip. I have a prescription from the dr called dovobet. Seems to be helping. It burned pretty hard for the first hour after I applied it.

Re: 1st time with psoriasis, age 51
You may be experiencing psoriasis for the first time now due to lack of adequate sunlight / Vitamin D.

Many/most psoriasis sufferers experience bouts in the winter when they get reduced sunlight, which causes reduced Vitamin D synthesis.

The best thing to make psoriasis go away is lots of sunshine.

Identifying a Link Between Vitamin D and Psoriasis
By Alan L. Rubin, MD from Vitamin D For Dummies

Skin production of vitamin D from exposure to the sun improves the condition of psoriasis — an autoimmune skin disease that consists of red, scaly patches that have a silvery-white appearance. This is using vitamin D as therapy, not for prevention; however, there’s no evidence that you can take large amounts of vitamin D as a pill and get the same benefits as UV light or a topical form of vitamin D.

Hmm I had been taking 1000 mg vitamin d and increased to 2000 per day. I am firm believer in needing D in the winter. Perhaps I should have stayed at the one pill instead of two?

If you check out the link above you will find that, unfortunately, Vitamin D pills may not help much.

You actually need to get sunlight on your skin to produce the Vitamin D or apply Vitamin D medications topically (on the skin).

Your skin has an acid mantle that is pH balanced and acts as a barrier. It cleans, exfoliates, and moisturizes itself. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to fuck with it.

I had sub derm and rosacea for a year and a half before I linked it to meeting my exbf and taking on his OCD, head to toe scrubbing and daily shampooing techniques. Before I met him, my skin was flawless and I never washed my face, and rarely my hair. Not even with water, because I hated the way it felt. (unless i got mud on it or something)

I went back to showering every other day, only using soap on my unmentionables, washing my hair biweekly and not touching my face, with anything. My skin completely repaired itself and is once again flawless. And I had rosacea badly, it was diagnosed. I could write a novel about the shit I tried, including drinking borax and hydrogen peroxide.

There is a theory that all these skin conditions are linked, different responses to the same underlying issue. I personally believe its overwashing. Try not fucking with your skin for 2 weeks and see if it starts clearing up.

Edited to add: I believe the Vitamin D thing plays into it also. I have read multiple times that it takes up to 48 hours for your skin to form Vitamin D after sunlight exposure, and it also cant form Vitamin D without the proper skin flora. You would lack both of these requirements if you are continuously stripping your skin - just a thought.

Re: 1st time with psoriasis, age 51
There's some very wise posts about Vitamin D.

In addition, try spot treating with tea tree oil mixed into a base of jojoba oil. Then it will help prevent fungal infections attacking the weakened psoriasis areas. The tea tree fights the fungus; the jojoba a perfect emolient.

Psoriasis is a case of the epidemis shedding too soon, but patients often pick at it because of the unsightly loose skin. If you do that, this weakens the layer underneath and will exacerbate shedding.
[link to upload.wikimedia.org]
The stratum corneum is what's coming off, and that's actually a tough layer like armor, the next layer the stratum lucidium is not as strong and so it can't repel as much. Picking at it leads to common skin infections like Staph aureaus (common pimples). Organic vinegar with mother in it like Braggs is cheap. Use that in a light way to help cut down on that.

Don't be overly concerned. It's not uncommon for people 50+ or so to start seeing this happen. Get some sunshine, just don't stay out too long.

Doing these simple things for six weeks, will probably take care of 90 % of it or more. Then just some skin maintenance, particularly in Winter as the air is so dry.

Skin diseases are often a mix of many things attacking because the skin is weakened. It's the main protection from infections.

If you are female?....maybe it's hormone related.

I broke out with it on both elbows when I tried HRT at 53. As soon as I stopped taking the hormones, it went away and hasn't come back.

Your Immune system was able to keep it in check until you hit 51.
Look into any and all "boosting your immune system" methods, Get some sun on your neck and head.
Try to unstress as much as possible.
And the number one best thing for me was to always use a hair dryer right after the bath/shower, don't leave psoriasis areas to air dry out especially near or in the hair, moisture just aggravates it.
Change your pillow case often too in an effort to keep the skin cleaner and unstressed.
Loose the baseball cap if you wear one, if you must wear a cap or hat make sure you keep plenty of clean laundered ones to swap out every other day or so.

Try removing all sugars from your diet.

This costs nothing, will undoubtedly improve your health overall, and will very, very likely improve the psoriasis.

Also try adding a probiotic to your diet.

That doesn't mean eating a cup of sugary yogurt. It means purchasing and taking one or two probiotic supplements daily.

The external skin is somewhat like an 'extension' of the the gut lining. When the bowels are unhealthy due to sugar in the diet and 'dysbiosis' -- unhealthy gut flora -- then skin problems flare up on the outside of the body.

Also, avoid fancy scented shampoos and hair products. Simply keep your hair clean.

A topical hydrocortisone product called scalpicin -- available over the counter at most drug stores -- can help clear up the itching and flaking on the scap while you are taking care of the real problem.

For some time, there's been a lot of work in England using LED light therapy. At certain wavelengths, it promotes healing. They actually sell an LED emitter for use on cold sores and this rapidly heals the area.

In the USA, this method is used in dermatology to resurface the skin, first for acne, but also for wrinkles. In addition it's been on plantar fasciitis.

It's one thing to try if the other things fail. It's a big expensive.

LED therapy is being tested to stimulate the auditory nerve by inserting it into the ear canal. It's also been tried by creating a helmet with many intense LEDs and there's some preliminary data for using that with Alzheimer's patients and other dementias.

Everything is tied to the Liver. It is overburdened, and or plugged with gallstones. Wrong selection of foods also.

First, you need a series of Liver cleanses - google hulda clark recipe.
( I use melatonin in place of ornithine)
You need to do a cleanse each weekend, until you see nothing but "chaff" as a result.
Avoid dairy.

You can point to any symptom such as hormones and say, that's it, but hormones are controlled by the liver.

Secondly, you need the colon therapy. Aloe vera.

Goat milk -kefir

Cultured cabbage juice- blend a head with water, place in large jar, saran wrap and leave for 3 days, until it smells like it has been run through you already, then strain and drink juice. It has the friendly bacteria. (thats the smell)

Be very careful using dovobet ointment...it contains strong steroids and will eventually bleach your skin pigment and thin the skin too. I wish my gp had informed me of this before using it for a year on my leg.
