The U.S and Russian can destroy each other and the world if they so choose. What more is there to say? France, UK, Israel, India, Pakistan also have nukes. What more is there to say? If you're attacked with nukes and have the capability to respond by causing massive destruction if necessary than what more do you need?

The U.S. has an extremely potent nuke deterrent and offensive capability, especially SLBMs. Russia like wise has a potent force. Why would they [Russia] want to spend all that money to 'over-take' the U.S.? The U.S. military-industrial complex is now taking a big hit because the costs are too high to maintain.

Does it matter anymore who has what or how much? Obviously there are enough nukes out there to completely destroy the planet and all life that's on it. This whole nuke posturing is so passe it's ridiculous. Instead the focus should be on getting free energy into the hands of the populace. That would end war as the battle for energy resources would basically come to an end. We know the secret government has free energy resources based on back engineered ET research. Heck, we even have our own space command and space ships. In fact, the military even has time travel. Hagel supports nuclear arms cuts, then elimination

President Obama will push to reduce the nation’s nuclear arsenal in his State of the Union address, according to a report.

The New York Times reported Monday that Obama while Obama is unlikely to provide specific figures in his Tuesday address to Congress, the proposal would cut the arsenal of deployed missiles to around 1,000, a one-third reduction from current levels.

The report says that Obama has already secured the support of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for the plan, with top brass believing the reductions will not compromise the military capabilities.

Remember that these cuts are to the 'deployed' number of nuclear warheads.

It doesn't state anything about how many nukes the US would have in its non-deployed arsenal. I think at present, the US has about 5,000 nukes in total that could be used if need be. Another 5,000 are currently being dismantled, plus they have plutonium pits for future use if need be.

The limits seem reasonable to me. The amount of targets in a nuclear war fighting role have diminished hugely. Remember that the large amount of nukes needed in the SIOP in the 1980s had to cover all targets in the Soviet Union - including the 'Stans', Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania etc. Plus the Warsaw Pact countries of Eastern Europe. All these aren't even part of the Russian Empire anymore so wouldn't be targeted.

The nuclear weapons depots in Russia have been consolidated from hundreds to about 50 (?). Many silos and bases have been decommissioned so less overall targets.

The US only needs a few hundred weapons for a counterforce strike against Russia due to this. The same amount for China. Any rogue country, like North Korea would need less then a dozen warheads each.

You only need a couple of hundred of warheads to hit most of Russia's main cities. Same for China.

1,000 warheads would be enough in my opinion, unless the Russians really can find a way to make a dependable anti-ballistic weapons system.

Silos are now obsolete and more nukes are on the move all the time. It means more targets.

Do they have more dangerous weapons by now? It may come to a huge problem if they don't.

USA's only advantage is their B2 bombers which able to carry nukes stealthly, but Russia has a lot of other means to deliever nukes.
