Seeing flashes of light in my eyelids whenever I hear a noise or thump
If I close my eyes, whether just sitting fully awake or laying down to go to bed, and something in the house makes an unexpected noise such as my cat jumping down off his kitty tree or my wife closing a cabinet door, I experience a flash of light on my eyelids that occurs at the exact same time as the noise.

Anyone know what this is called?

Maybe you have Synesthesia. You're basically "seeing" sounds.
This is an oubliette. The labyrinth is full of 'em.

exploding head syndrome

when you get it like I got it, you'll be lying in bed, just about to doze off, a spider will fart, and it will sound like a nuke went off a few doors down from you.

I think you guys might be right on the synethesia. I doubt it's exploding head syndrome because I see the light even while fully awake with my eyes closed. EHS seems to be related to sleep while what I see occurs whenever I hear an unexpected noise.

I have had multiple eye surgeries in the last 2 years. This is when it started. I know what a detached retina flash looks like. This is much different. It's more like a Blue flash of light that is on my eyelids.

Very interesting guys!

According to Richard Cytowic, sound → color synesthesia, or chromesthesia is "something like fireworks": voice, music, and assorted environmental sounds such as clattering dishes or dog barks trigger color and firework shapes that arise, move around, and then fade when the sound ends.[3] For some, the stimulus type is limited (e.g., music only, or even just a specific musical key); for others, a wide variety of sounds triggers synesthesia.

Yup, experience the flash of light when there's a louder noise. Just notice it sometimes.

I started getting mine around the age of 28. Did you always have it or did it start later in life?
