It was all about proving superiority. Had Russia gone on to do the same the US would have gone further and built bases on the moon etc. Militarization of space was a big deal then. But there was no potential to earn money buy going to the moon. Therefore when the Russians did not compete there was no reason to go back. Scientific expeditions have continued. But that does not require manned travel. Cold War was a farce. Both countries were ruled by the same banking families. Propagandized so that both sides could build up highly profitable armaments. The Apollo's Saturn V rocket used up 96% of its fuel in 10 minutes, reaching only 118 miles altitude. How cute. Yet another person that doesn't understand how multi-stage rockets work! Show using actual numbers that they didn't have the fuel. Show they didn't have the delta V. Try starting with the Tsiolkovsky equation. I'll bet you won't even try.
