YouTube's hilarious cat videos could soon cost you $5 a month
YouTube is reportedly "experimenting" with the idea of charging people who watch videos on its website.

Google, which operates the vast library of funny cat footage, has asked 25 or so producers to put forward applications to create channels of videos that would cost viewers $1 to $5 a month to access. This is according to Advertising Age, which cited multiple people familiar with the dealings.

Fuck that, they nearly run me off when they force me to watch a fucking commercial before a video, if it weren't for the option to skip it after 5 seconds I wouldn't ever go back.

Looks like there's an opening in the market for a website that doesn't charge people to watch videos.

Just try it you will be facing a copyright infringement case faster than you can upgrade to accommodate traffic.

Fuck them.

They meddle with views, they plague you with ads, they delete videos seemingly at whim.

Their terms of use with regards to uploads is so vague they can pretty much claim any video is a violation at any time.

Now they want to charge people?

I say go for it, more power to them.

The free market will decide their fate... (until the Almighty Google begins systematically destroying or buying up any potential rivals that is).

I remember when the "you" in Youtube actually meant something.

May as well call it GooTube now... reflects the owners and the content.

I second this too. In fact I ALWAYS find another copy of a video if it forces me to watch the whole shit ad without the skip option.

Well yeah, of course.

First I'd have to hire an army of jewish lawyers to defend myself from copyright lawsuits filed by an army of jewish lawyers.

^^^this. I barely tolerate the 5 seconds. I know they think it's a good idea, but it will kill the site.

Newsflash for the geniuses with the idea:

If you give people something free for a few years, they will hate you if you then try to make them pay for it.

Well that's just stupid. Probably over half the viewers are kids and teens, who's parents aren't going to shell out a monthly fee so their kids can have a few laughs after school. Youtube will become a ghost town.

I wouldn't say a complete ghost town cause some videos will still be free and we do have other video websites.

Rumor has it the final tally was 98% of users in favour of Hotmail paying them to use it's "service".

It's not clear which channels will be part of the first paid-subscription rollout, but it is believed that YouTube will lean on the media companies that have already shown the ability to develop large followings on the video platform, including networks like Machinima, Maker Studios and Fullscreen. YouTube is also looking outside its current roster of partners for candidates

More info above

They say this will be a small experiment in the spring but would you pay for it. NOPE!

including networks like Machinima,
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33269599

This explains Machinima's recent "restructuring" where they laid off a bunch of good people (the kind of people who wouldn't dig this move by YT) and basically did some mysterious background shit that made them smell a lot more commercial and corporate in nature.

Shady bastards I goddamn knew it felt like they were prepping for something and this is it.
