Actually, I have found this suprisingly untrue. I have repeatedly been with men who push a serious relationship instantly because they are afraid if they don't "lay claim" to you, that you are going to get interested/sleep with somebody else. Maybe I am subconsciously picking the weird ones, but that has been my experience so far.

Unless a guy is going to get sex, he has absolutely NO REASON to be bothered with a girl. That's why he'll have kids and support them. Cut off the sex and don't expect support. The same is true if she does another guy - she's damaged goods.
