That's what I was thinking, the size of it. But, up there, even it the asteroid was 2 or 3 times bigger, I think the chances of it hitting would still be relatively the same.
Quoting: Septenary Man

Yes. It is really interesting though, that regardless of size, these things are whizzing by close enough to disrupt our civilization. We have no defenses against a cosmic "hailstorm".

Fascinating.

I have convinced myself this thing isn't going to hit us, but one thing bothers me that I have not yet seen mentioned here. According to the news, and all the hype, it's going to come super close on February 15th, and we need to be watching for it on the 15th. The problem is, according to the JPL orbit diagram, the closest approach is actually February 16th. Why are all these sources saying it will be the 15th, when JPL says it's the 16th? Something still smells fishy to me here. Somebody is either lying, or wrong.

I will have a communication breakdown party at my house if this happens. hopefully nothing falls on anyone's head.

You'd have to drive over to everyone's house to tell them you're having a party.

An asteroid about half the size of a football field will zoom past Earth on Feb. 15, closer than the man-made satellites that power GPS, says NASA.

“This is a record-setting close approach,” Don Yeomans of NASA’s Near Earth Object Program at JPL said in a video released by NASA this week. Yeomans, however, emphasized that the asteroid, designated 2012DA14, won’t hit Earth.

“It will come interestingly close, closer than many man-made satellites,” he said.

2012DA14 will thread the gap between low earth orbit, where the International Space Station and many earth observation satellites are located and the higher belt of geosynchronous satellites, which provide weather data and telecommunications.

“It will come interestingly close, closer than many man-made satellites."

- Don Yeomans of NASA’s Near Earth Object Program at JPL

At its closest point, the asteroid will only be 17,200 miles above our planet’s surface.

Could be, but I kind of doubt it.

The thing is 3-D space is really big, bigger than us tards on the ground usually figure on. It either hits the satellite or it doesn't, and even a near miss does not count, a little above or below target.

In fact even if it does happen, I would look for a conspiracy behind that.

Think I'll go cook myself some eggs and bacon now!

Depends on the trajectory.
If it comes in oblique.. much more possibility of contact.
In and out. Two chances.

According to JPL.. the trajectory plot could change as it nears and more info is available.
They've already acknowledged that earth's gravity will affect it's future approach if it misses this time.

I don't think they would admit that it was going to hit.. even if they knew for sure... which they don't.

Has anybody noticed any space colony construction starts lately..?

In the worst-case scenario, we would need to be prepared for the event of an asteroid making impact, in which case we would need to figure out ways to move large populations and possibly develop a fair lottery system for what would be much coveted space in the bunker. Some people, of course, may choose to accept our fate, if not embrace it, when the doomsday event draws near. On the other hand, experts such as Stephen Hawking have suggested that we need to be prepared to abandon Earth altogether, which would require the construction of a space colony.

Only needs one or two satellites to be blown to pieces and space billiards will finish off the rest. It's enough of a mess up there already with all the space junk. Will be a thousand years before we can use a satellite again or launch anything into space whilst we build and deploy space robot vacuum devices.

Wonder if this is 'backup'. Seems pretty coincidental, and I don't believe in coincidences.

NASA Launches Next-Gen Communications Satellite
"The first of NASA's three next-generation Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS), known as TDRS-K, launched at 8:48 p.m. EST Wednesday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida...

...With this launch, NASA has begun the replenishment of our aging space network," said Jeffrey Gramling, TDRS project manager. "This addition to our current fleet of seven will provide even greater capabilities to a network that has become key to enabling many of NASA's scientific discoveries."

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19588417

Yeah< I think you're right. Just did a real quick Google search.

January 29, 2013
Over the weekend the website ussc.gov was used to host a retro game of ‘Asteroids’ for those with the distributed code. Typing “enter Konami code (with cursor keys) ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A <Enter>” while on the website turned the virtual government property into a revised version of the classic Atari game. The player blasts away the website outlining the guidelines for sentencing to reveal an image of an Anonymous’ appropriated “Guy Fawkes” mask made up of text reading “We do not forgive. We do not forget.”...

...While the game of ‘Asteroids’ seems like fun and games it’s merely a publicity stunt for the serious political dealings going on beneath the high scores. Anonymous apparently has encrypted government files. The nature of the files are unknown but they are threatening to de-encrypt the files publicly if the U.S. government fails to reform aspects of the legal system which have led to inappropriate prosecutions.

I covered the possible impacts here:
Thread: 2012 DA14 - Satellite Collision Risk - Now Ruled Out with New Data on Page 2!!!
If I re-ran these calculations with the latest astrometric data (the asteroid was found again last month and new astrometric data is now available) it would probably exclude these possibilities. I would do that, but my computer is preoccupied running calculations on another asteroid right now.
