Strong winds along E. coast w/cold front tied to "bombing" low, 970 to 959 mb from 12z-18z, GFS then takes to 940 mb [link to twitter.com]

Hi Luisport, what does that mean? A blizzard?? I don't think I can take any more bad weather...thanks to the very bad winds this morning, the tree that was next to our house snapped in half and landed on our roof!! There's some damage, not sure about the roof yet. I don't want any more bad weather for a while!!

Definition of GFS

GFS model stands for the Global Forecast System model...the newest model version of what used to be called the AVN/MRF model (AVN=aviation, MRF= medium range forecast model). The GFS is a global spectral model and predicts for the many regions of the world. It's a relatively coarse model, not as fine a resolution as the NAM described below. Another subset of the model, the GFSX (X for extended) also predicts over longer ranges, as much as 144 hours to 384 hours into the future. It's run 4 times a day. While not as 'fine' a resolution as the NAM model, the GFS model has wonderful features and is the one I usually bet on.

(I had to look it up myself...)

Thank you as usual for the heads up.

Like Laura, I don't think I could stand more bad weather - the winds last night were insane - worse, and more frightening than Hurricane Sandy.

Today was the first day we've seen the sun for over a week... .

well this is more than bad weather... a 967mb low nor'easter is a very dangerous storm! Big sustained wind gusts, heavy rain, big power outages, big waves in coast...

Re: Late Sunday, GFS rapidly develops a Clipper system into a strong Nor'Easter, 1001 mb to 967 mb in 18-hours... 940mb later!!!
This type of storm has characteristics similar to a hurricane. More specifically it describes a low-pressure area whose center of rotation is just off the East Coast and whose leading winds in the left-forward quadrant rotate onto land from the northeast. The precipitation pattern is similar to that of other extratropical storms. Nor'easters can cause severe coastal flooding, coastal erosion, hurricane force winds or blizzard conditions; these conditions are usually accompanied with very heavy snow or rain, depending on when the storm occurs. Nor'easters can be devastating and damaging, especially in the winter months, when most damage and deaths are cold-related, as nor'easters are known for bringing extremely cold air down from the Arctic air mass. Nor'easters thrive on the converging air masses; that is, the polar cold air mass and the warmer oceanic air over the Gulf Stream.[1] [link to en.wikipedia.org]

Impacts

Nor'easters usually bring massive amounts of precipitation, high winds, large waves, and marginal storm surge to coastal areas. Depending on the circumstances and the time of year, nor'easters can bring rain, ice, and snow. Ice, snow, and high winds can shut down major airports for days leaving thousands stranded. Ice and snow can also shut down major highways and interstates leaving motorists unable to reach their destinations. During nor'easters, many people lose power because of high winds, ice, and snow.

Biologists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod have determined Nor'easters are an environmental factor for red tides of the Atlantic coast.

God. Poor East Coast.

One thing keeps bugging me. The West Coast. Its been really quiet and aside from the snow further inlans in Southwestern Bc its been pretty normal and pretty warm.

I saw a weather map off the west coast last night all in purple and reds and thought what the hell is that...? Is it heading our way Luis...?

What off the West Coast along BC. Anything we should be watching for coming up in the next 7 days...?

Love your threads!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thankyou Luis. I have many critters and having a heads up a few days in advance is the best as I can move them into shelters and warm buildings if need be. A gentle snow is one thing but a full out blizzard is another. Takes time to move them around to safety.

WOW did you see the boulder sized hail in southern india. It killed 7 and wiped out villages and crops and their livestock.

Crazy!!!

Thats the type of shit I worry about. Freezing rain and wind and hail with livestock.
