Quoting: ^TrInItY^ Which under normal circumstances might elicit a response but considering who is running things now it's unlikely the USA will do a damn thing.. Or a nuclear test. I agree that they'll be no reaction though. I saw an article recently where they literally said that they are going to test fire an icbm in the direction of the USA... With the Clintons leaving the administration all hell might break loose.. For some reason the North Koreans love the Clintons.. Obama - not so much Very interesting point about Hilary departing and all. |

Kim also reportedly said, “The country will be under martial law starting from midnight Jan. 29 and all the frontline and central units should be ready for a war,” the source said. The North’s state media reported Sunday that Kim convened an emergency meeting with top defense and security officials on Saturday. It said Kim made a stern command to take “effective, high-profile state measures” and “assigned specific tasks” to officials. The measures were sparked by new sanctions unanimously passed by the United Nations Security Council on North Korean entities and individuals, including travel bans and asset freezes, the media said. The reports boosted speculation that Kim is preparing a third nuclear weapons test. So no change. |

"Provocations are always possible because North Korean troops have been put on full alert," Kim told AFP. Outgoing South Korean president Lee Myung-Bak held an emergency security meeting of senior ministers and military staff and warned Pyongyang against "reckless action". Myung-Bak is a lame duck. NK may decide it's time to push the envelope a little with some saber rattling. It has a Reuters byline, but it has the Xinhua stamp of approval. "S.Korea warns against nuclear test Reuters | 2013-2-1 0:58:01 By Agencies South Korean President Lee Myung-bak held an emergency security meeting Thursday that warned North Korea of "serious consequences" if it went through with an expected nuclear test. The meeting at the presidential Blue House included the defense minister, National Intelligence Service chief and the national security advisor. A statement issued afterwards said Lee had insisted on a strengthened defense posture, given Pyongyang's apparent desire to take advantage of the ongoing leadership transition in the South. Lee will be formally replaced as president by the newly elected Park Geun-hye on February 25. "The government urges North Korea to immediately stop all provocative statements and actions and abide by international obligations including UN Security Council resolutions," the statement said. "If the North miscalculates and commits a provocative act again, it would face various serious consequences," it added. waterlily User ID: 32405669 United States 01/31/2013 02:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Republic of Korea hopes for third time lucky on rocket launch Updated: 2013-01-30 07:26 By Zhou Wa and Cheng Guangjin (China Daily) No problems reported from final countdown The Republic of Korea will make its third and final attempt to send its space rocket into orbit on Wednesday, in an effort to realize a long-held ambition. Despite a series of difficulties and failures, the ROK has maintained its homegrown rocket program because a successful launch will bring Seoul international recognition, greater self-confidence and economic benefits, according to observers. Yonhap News Agency said a final launch simulation of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1, also known as the Naro, was conducted on Tuesday and there were no apparent problems. The agency said the rocket is tentatively set to lift off at 4 pm on Wednesday from the Naro Space Center. The exact time of the launch is expected to be disclosed about two hours beforehand. The ROK tried to launch the Naro in 2009 and 2010, but both attempts ended in failure. Seoul also planned to launch the rocket on Oct 26, and again on Nov 29, but both were put off because of technical problems. Wednesday's attempt is the third and the last trial under an agreement between the ROK and Russia, whose Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center manufactured the first stage of the Naro. The ROK lacks the technology. [link to usa.chinadaily.com.cn] I would like to remind you that while US sources were poo-pooing the launch of the "weather satellite" a couple of months ago, the darned thing was up there going around and around in orbit all the time the US said it failed. It is not always wise to airily dismiss the madmen of the world. *********** WaterLily *********** " Do I dare Disturb the universe?" -- T. S. Elliot, Love Song of J. Literally anything could happen, because their economic situation is very tenuous and they're starving. It's only a matter of time before a coup happens. Meanwhile we have a weak President in the USA. We have a lame duck South Korea leader. We have Japan and China saber rattling. You have to ask yourself, what would be the downside of North Korea invading South Korea from their perspective? It's a matter of brinksmanship. I personally doubt that Obama would launch first, for that's not the current nuclear doctrine. That puts the USA in a response mode of waiting while an invasion takes place. South Korea could not repel the North Koreans in all honestly unless the USA also engaged. Anonymous Coward User ID: 30665644 United States 01/31/2013 02:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm glad to see this pinned. No nation declares marial law without a reason. Something has changed, but because there's such limited information coming from North Korea, it may be awhile (if ever) than we know what happened. I would suspect some military folks tried an abortive attempt at a coup, or else some organied resistance is happening. Quoting: Don'tBeAfraid Here's a related story: [link to www.theatlanticwire.com] " An officer with the Korean People's Army chimed in with something you'd probably hear from a Mortal Kombat character: We, servicepersons, are now filled with the fixed will to annihilate at once the hostile forces infringing upon the sovereignty of the country. The powerful striking means of the Paektusan revolutionary army have already been in full readiness to shower fire of merciless punishment on the disgusting den of evils and show what a real war is like." And another one: [link to www.businessinsider.com] "While it has been anticipated that Pyongyang will go ahead with what will be the regime's third nuclear test, in spite of international pressure to refrain from doing so, analysts had predicted that the blast would be timed to coincide with the birthday on February 16 of Kim Jong-il, the former leader who died in late 2011, or the inauguration of the new government in South Korea nine days later. The reports now suggest that the demonstration of North Korea's nuclear prowess is more imminent. In March 1993, North Korea placed the nation under martial law shortly before it announced it was withdrawing from the Treaty in the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The regime also ordered its troops to be ready for war." Most likely they are declaring martial law because of the statement that South Korea recently made that there would be very serious repercussions if they went ahead with the nuclear test..including and not ruling out physical force. |

What's more likely is a border probe. Such a thing happening now with so much tension with the changing of the South Korean leader and high tension from the North Koreas could result in a military exchange. It wouldn't take much honestly. In Oct 2012, a NK soldier literally walked straight to the SK side seeking asylum and caused a major stink for lax security on the SK side: [link to www.channelnewsasia.com] "The defector made his way through rows of electrified fencing dividing the two Koreas under cover of darkness. Initially, military officials on the South side said he had been detected by surveillance cameras and guided to safety. "We're investigating how such a (false) report was made," the JCS official said. A lawmaker from the main opposition Democratic United Party, Kim Kwang-Jin, said the incident highlighted "loose" discipline in the military. "A North Korean agent armed with grenades or guns could have wiped out an entire platoon of South Korean soldiers," Kim said, pointing to another case of a North Korean civilian who crossed the border undetected last month."
