ALERT! High radiation Hawaii!
The radiation monitor on Hawaii's west island has spiked well over 100 CPM today and is still spiking.

[link to radiationnetwork.com]

That is a significant amount of radiation passing by Hawaii.

What's going on here? Is it passing fallout from Fukushima, or is radioactive gas venting from the deep volcano chain?

The monitor I'm referring to is on Kauai, and that whole island is supposed to be a long-dormant volcano (unlike Kilauea). If there IS radioactive gas coming up there, the entire Hawaii volcano hotspot could be about to blow.

Bumping for discussion!

I am aware of space-bound radiation, but that would not cause a single monitor to rapidly spike when no others are.

In this instance theres a good chance it is from Fukushima considering how close it is to hawaii.

My beautiful Kauai- breaks my heart. visited last month for the 1st time, saw the amazing beauty..brings me such sadness. i knew before my visit that the coral reefs and sea turtles were struggling, the japan debris would be arriving soon and that there was radiation in the islanders urine, i still saw through it all and knew it would be the one and only time in my life. no regrets, just the lovely memories..we are all in this together, no one is immune. just freaking tragic.

Unfortunately, the ground reading for Tokyo is utterly irrelevant.

The fallout is blowing east. Only reason the US mil decided against total evacuation of Tokyo.

It's also heading east via water pollution.

I have no reason to declare this radiation spike a product of Fukushima, but I have less than no reason to discount it. That is the very first rad monitor any incoming fallout would pass.

Re: ALERT! High radiation Hawaii!
Just hit over 100 CPM.

Watching the other Hawaii monitor to see if it's localized or moving, but it hasn't budged much yet.

Venting gas from the magma pocket? This monitor should be significantly lower than it is...

Ahmm...

10 million becquerels per hour current emissions from Fuku.
Probably more than that because that number comes from Tepco... and they are some lying m-f-ckers.

No reason to doubt that it's from Japan.
Hawai is downwind...
So is the mainland.

I'd have to see someone prove another source of the radiation to believe otherwise.
Just happens to be an ongoing triple nuclear reactor meltdown in Japan.

I'm inclined to agree.

The only reason I'm not so sure is the location. Volcano activity has just skyrocketed, and I wouldn't be surprised by a big gas release.

But the other Hawaii monitor hasn't risen. I'm keeping an eye on the whole west coast to see if this is something local or not. If it is another present from our good friends at TEPCO, other radnets along the way should start lighting up too.

Definitely something to keep an eye on. That stuff settles on the ground, crops wont come up on the west coast.

Kinda took a quick look at the weather.
Rainy and overcast.
There is a reason it's called fallout.
Rain localizes it.

Good to hear from a resident! Got anything else that could be a source in the area?

They could be prepping missiles right there, which wouldn't surprise me with current N.Korea tensions, but would that cause so much radiation to be released? Hitting alert level on and off for at least the seven hours I've been monitoring it.

Could be. The other rad monitor on mainland Hawaii is starting to creep up a bit now too. If that one rises significantly now too, I'd say we have proof of another moving wave of fallout from Japan.

the radiation monitor is on the north shore. missile base is on the north west.mountain range in between. trade winds usually blow from the east. usually at noon the west side will get on shore winds from the west.sun went down about an hour ago. winds die down. nasa has an observatory at about 2500ft which is located mid way between the base and the monitor.

exactly.normally winds blow from the east, tradewinds. usually they are calm at night and increase during the day. storms will turn the winds west on occasion.

Hilo had one of the highest monitor readings that I observed during the worst of the emissions in March 2011.
Others were Phoenix, Eugene, Eureka, Tucson and a few more I'd have to look up.

If there is any contamination concentrated in the debris, it could blow onshore in the form of sea spray.
