 I agree and unless the restaurant made it clear that a ridiculously high 18% automatic gratuity was going to be added to the bill then she had every right not to pay it. 10% is plenty. She's lucky to have a job and should understand that most of her customers are also short on $$$. If someone is short on money, they have no business wasting the waiters/ waitress' time going out. Stay home and cook. Many states don't require wait staff to make minimum wage, so they are getting paid 2-6.00 an hour. By the way, according to wallstreet journal, 18% is the average tip these days. 10% was the average in 1950.  That's a load of crap. OK for Wall Street Banksters perhaps but not the rest of us. If the lower tipping customers stay away then the restaurant won't even be in business. If they don't like it then get another job, that's what I had to do.
