Super Bowl -NORAD Operation Noble Eagle
What does the President, United Nations and the Super Bowl all have in common? NORAD air defense.

February 1, 2013 - TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region fighters will be busy during Super Bowl XLVII protecting the skies around the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on game day as a part of Operation Noble Eagle.

Air Force fighter jets will be airborne Sunday enforcing the Federal Aviation Administration’s temporary flight restricted zone during Sunday’s big game.

Lt. Gen. Sid Clarke, Continental U.S. NORAD Region commander, explained the Continental U.S. NORAD Region provides air defense for the protection of the continental United States to include events such as the State of the Union Address, United Nations General Assemblies, and this year’s Super Bowl.

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla., Jan. 28, 2013 – Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region fighters, along with interagency partners, will be busy well before Super Bowl Sunday preparing to protect the skies around the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Just like the teams in the Super Bowl, the Continental U.S. NORAD Region and its partners will practice before the big game.

Exercise Falcon Virgo 13-Super Bowl, a NORAD air defense exercise, will take place tomorrow in the greater New Orleans area to allow interagency partners the chance to practice procedures for responding to airspace violations.

The Falcon Virgo exercise is a series of training flights in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, the FBI, Customs and Border Protection, Civil Air Patrol, the 601st Air and Space Operations Center, and the Continental U.S. NORAD Region’s Western Air Defense Sector.

Operation Noble Eagle

President George W. Bush authorized a partial mobilization of the reserves Sept. 15 for homeland defense and civil support missions in response to the terrorist attacks Sept. 11 at the New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

While the authorization legally allows Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to call up to a million reserve soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines and Coast Guard members for up to two years of active duty, service chiefs said they only need about 35,000 between them for the stated missions collectively dubbed Operation Noble Eagle.
