Share Your Fond Memories of GLP Addiction
So what's your favorite GLP memory?

I've been here for 10 years... I remember when it was really new to me, really exciting, and the addiction was just beginning to coarse through my veins...

One thing I remember pretty clearly is the nervousness I'd feel when my PM inbox read "1 New". That feeling a socially awkward person gets when they step into a really crowded room and people start looking at them.

I would see that "1" and get butterflies. I'd think, "OMG. I'm in trouble. I've really done it now."

I don't get too many PMs even now as a mod, but I definitely never get that feeling anymore.

But I'm still addicted to GLP. What's up with that? Anybody else ever have an addiction this longstanding (that wasn't a substance)?

Re: Share Your Fond Memories of GLP Addiction
10 years, eh?
Well, I suppose this is your second home then.

I was addicted when the "world record thread"/morans where around.
Was going through "something"....and it was a fun escape to be drunk
with a bunch of morans and post meaningless shit.

I think the novelty has long ago wore off.
But I do check in everyday (almost) for breaking news mostly.
And that occasional rare thread that blows your mind...I love those.

Re: Share Your Fond Memories of GLP Addiction
I've been here three years....and have many good memories. I come here because I find those who think like me and validate my thoughts, not reject me as a kook. I come here when I need real news of what's going on, and I come here when no one else understands, for different perspectives, and when I'm sad or alone ...I know I will always find a kind soul and a laugh. Thanks GLP

Re: Share Your Fond Memories of GLP Addiction
I have had points in my 7 or so year addiction where I was so proud that I "got" all the current in-jokes due to being logged in here for such an excessive amount of hours every day and not much ever getting past me.

I guess lately I come here more for information and amusement than for any sense of camaraderie, if I ever had any.

But, life would feel more isolated without GLP, that's for sure!

Well not exactly a memory because it wasn't so long ago . . . but a bunch of friends came over for happy hour and in the middle of it, I came into my office and got on GLP to respond to a thread that had me going.

One of my friends came in and asked 'what the hell are you doing'???

Ahahaha - I jumped up real quick and said 'nothing'!!

Re: Share Your Fond Memories of GLP Addiction
I've been here in one guise or another for longer than I care to remember, can't even remember how I first got here tbh.

When I was all full of zeal back in the day I used to love those long nights staying up arguing, a bazillion tabs open with searches and articles, studies etc, researching claims and digging evidence, battling back and forth.

Doing the "bull ring" when you were the only person in a thread holding a certain position and you would take on all comers, motherfuckers coming at you from all sides.

Nowadays I don't have that drive anymore, I'm more content to live and let live... most of the time, sometimes I get the old fire back.

There's no specific memory that stands out, it's more the people who have come and gone, the characters, the opponents and allies in the various causes and beliefs.

People who you thought would be here forever who are now long gone and the upstarts who turned into seasoned vets.

The scandals, the dramas, the war hysteria that would sometimes boil over into almost parody, the Doom flaps when we'd all be crawling up the walls thinking this was it, the end had come.

GLP man, nobody does it better.

Edit: I thought of one, solving a code that somebody had posted, it was a cipher I actually knew from when I was very young and nobody was cracking it.

Everybody was using google and shit and failing and I used a pen and paper and cracked it and SHR complimented me on it, I was bursting with pride over that one lol.

Been here for a long time. Seems like it was 2001 or 2002. I found the site through Kent Steadman and his Cyberspaceorbit site. Took some time out due to another addiction and work, but now I'm in here more often again. I just brought my other addiction with me. :)

Ive been hiding it from my wife for a long time now.

I access GLP from public internet and sometimes while wearing a bath robe.

I am so ashamed.

"I'm not an addict. I can quit anytime I want." Uh, right??

I love my GLP fix. This place is the best news and SHTF alert site out there. The gems that can be found here are worth digging thru the crap to find them.

I had a really great trip into the Yosemite area one weekend thanks to GLP - around August 2011. I think all TPTB had cleared their calendars and there was a near miss asteroid or something to that effect. I wanted to get away from the coast, just in case so Yosemite was the destination. I was fairly new here at the time and I was so hooked. Still am!!

Re: Share Your Fond Memories of GLP Addiction
This is my third year. I am completely hooked on this place, but favorite memories.....

Probably three.

I would definitely go with the old green room thread since deleted. But it allowed me a local thread to get to know other people n glp and become 'friends'. It was when karma was a brand new system, and we used it to trade karma points....the op of the thread was really sick, and never around. I wonder if she is okay today, I think about her sometimes. efore she was hospitalized, I guess she banned apollo from the thread, and then he started his own green room thread, and then it became a battle and a mess.....finally those threads were deleted, and it was a good idea to do so....but for a short time in the beginning, it was nice to have a place to visit with regulars and share some laughs, smilies what not.

Another one is during the japanese EQ, and all the nuclear business, GLP was a huge conglomeration of emergent and dire doom threads. GLP was a living breathing doom generating machine!!! These threads were so doomy, people had to outwit each other, on whom could make the scariest emergent titles. One day somebody posted a thread, which to me, was the best EVER thread title, I laughed so damn hard at the passion and ferver and angst in the title.....nothing has come close since....it still makes me laugh to this day:

Thread: THE FUCKING MOX RODS ARE ON FUCKING FIRE!!!! RADIOACTIVE FIRE!!

Finally, my fondest memories are of voicechat. I never went in the first year I was on GLP, and when I started meandering in there, there was some lady who talked ALL the time about weird stuff, and talked over everyone else....so it was a turn off, but I would go back every now and then hoping to find time she wasnt in there consuming all the virtual oxygen. And it worked!!!! I made a ton of friends, then the different chat room capabilities were made, so we all had a place to go, and it was a hell of a lot of fun. I dont go in much now, more back to threading....but i know there are some awesome people on VC who you dont see much in the threads....Good times!!!!

So many fond memories to choose from...

My 2 favorites are

1. When I had major life saving surgery in 2009, the outpouring of prayers and well wishes from GLPers, that I will never forget!

2. Was when you posted a pic MO!
