Eight Retailers That Will Close the Most Stores
"It is the time of year again, when America’s largest retailers release those critical holiday season figures and disclose their annual sales. A review of these numbers tells us a great deal about how most of the companies will do in the upcoming year. And while successful retailers in 2012 may add stores this year, those that have performed very poorly may have to cut locations during 2013 to improve margins or reverse losses."

1. Best Buy

2. Sears

3. J.C. Penny

4. Office Depot

5. Barnes and Noble

6. Gamestop

7. Office Max

8. Radio Shack

a horrendous economy combined with internet sales? whatever the reason it will mean more people looking for work and still obama and his gang (including republicans), thinks amnesty is a good idea? we are truly screwed.

You are giving us the financial bad news today!

Fewer employees at these stores, and the medical device excise tax on top of that, and that is of course just a tad bit of the stuff going on now.

I really want to live like the Amish.

(and aren't they exempt from oblamascare?)

wherever i look there is nothing but bad news...i am hoping that more and more people wake up. have you noticed how high gas prices are and yet there is not one story about how that is affecting the bottom line on the economy?

and we don't even complain about it, we just fall into line and pay it.

Woah, woah, woah.

If the big box stores, aka MAJOR CORPORATIONS close down, you think retail will just cease to exist?

Just as much as offshoring the manufacturing jobs killed American jobs, the big box stores killed entrepreneurs!

Only 25-30 years ago, there were NO big box stores, but every single town had at least one "Mom & Pop":
hardware store
pharmacy
supermarket
men's clothing
women's clothing
possibly even a mom & pop department store.

The Big Box stores, all 8 that you mention offer low-paying, wage-slave jobs in place of decent pay jobs that people were happy to work an entire lifetime at for an owner they saw every single day.
These big box stores contribute to wickedness the world over by employing child labor, forced labor (yes, it is true!), and borderline slave labor to create purposefully poor products...aka planned obsolescene...in order to keep the "First World" in a consumerist, materialist paradigm.

These big boxes drove mom & pop's out of business because of the offshoring and slave labor. Now there is no accountability! Do you go and meet with the owner when you have an issue with a product you purchased at Best Buy? Radio Shack? Walmart? No. "I have to check with my supervisor. Please hold."

Major profits again are funneled into the pockets of the 0.0001%, consolidating wealth further. And, I am no socialist. I am a free-market libertarian, but that only works on a global scale when EVERY country is free-market.

FUCK the big box stores.

You cry because if stores close, then the cashiers and stock-people lose their minimum wage jobs?
You cry because the managers who put in 60+ hours every week, sacrificing weekends and holidays all year will lose their $34,000 per year total salary?

Think about this subject deeper. Yes it would be bad in a very short time period if these big boxes close. Overall, it will be so much better for America if and when they all close for good.

The problem is that nobody has the money to restart the Mom and Pop stores. New regulations, Taxes and excessive rents prohibit sucessfully starting new businesses.

There will be no one to supply jobs to those unemployed by these layoffs. It is part of the plan to break this once great country.

loss of jobs means less people working, yes? maybe the high school kid earnig extra money towards college, maybe the mom with a part-time job helping to supplement the household income will feel quite differently about stores closing than you do? Not everyone is a manager making 34,000 and by the way at this point in the economy some people would kill for 60 hours/34,000 dollars a year.

you seem to forget that our economy is NOT expanding so when a job is lost it is probabaly lost for good. now maybe that fits your anti-corporation stand, but you have not suggested any replacement? Care to elablorate how losing workers and jobs is good for america?

I forgot to add this at the end of my rant:

All of this is not by happenstance or coincidence. This has been carefully drafted and planned since at least the end of WWII, starting with planned obsolescence.

It does not look great for independent small business owners, either.

Tomorrow is the last day for a wonderful cafe that was a magnet for lots and lots of local people.

Not the cheapest prices, but you could sit and enjoy a neat setting, great conversation, day in and day out.

Second restaurant to go out of business there.

A bunch of jobs lost.

The best cranberry bread pudding ever.

They named an omlette after my husband after his recipe proved a hit.

Well, as someone said here, jobs gone now are going to be very hard to find again.

One last thing. it is irrelevant to me in this thread whether the big box stores replaced another store, or not.

It is irrelevant to the PRESENT loss of jobs.

We can argue all day about whether it was better to have the local shops - maybe sometimes - or whether their demise was caused by internal issues - or whether they were forced out by the bigger store coming in 15 miles away.

The fact is, we have the stores we have,

and when they contract, we have fewer jobs.

Big brother is narrowing the job market to jobs with the government will be the only jobs to get if your not on the government spread the wealth plan.

I think money is going away and its going to credits in the future with the chip as your bank and wallet.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18237036

The economy is not expanding because the healthy fractional lending system that expands a healthy economy is being suspended because they can't steer the resulting inflation to where they want.
The fractional lending system creates money out of thin air through leverage. The leverage that has been created is in danger of failing (wealth) The banks, wall street, Insurance companies and corporations have that created inflation/leverage on their balance sheets classified as an asset. They are sacrificing the common mans needs for their survival. When one of us goes into a bank and deposits a dollar into a checking, savings or money market account the banks are permitted to leverage that dollar and create $9 of new lending. That lending goes into all kinds of things and is not directable or steerable in any one direction.
Thats a problem when the bankers and financial institutions are trying to keep control over the economy but their balance sheets threaten to take them out of business.

When the money is just printed and not created from Production, output and investment that inflation/money expansion is steerable and can be directed to any sector of the economy that the pressman wants. If you were to combine healthy inflation, through the fractional lending scheme with unhealthy outright printed inflation(as the bernanski is doing) the resulting hyperinflation/expansion in the money supply would make the dollar or any other fiat currency around the world worthless within weeks.

So you see why there is no jobs and won't be until all the debt can be cleared from the system which is "Never" because it is levered 100to 1.

Good luck folks !

Ah, yes agreed.

I forgot to add this at the end of my rant:

All of this is not by happenstance or coincidence. This has been carefully drafted and planned since at least the end of WWII, starting with planned obsolescence.

Totally agree as they anticipated the inflation of leverage to the point of failure. So, they moved the industry out of the country to slow down inflation, years ago so that they could direct the money to themselves and their friends directly from the printing press.

Re: Eight Retailers That Will Close the Most Stores
One last thing. it is irrelevant to me in this thread whether the big box stores replaced another store, or not.

It is irrelevant to the PRESENT loss of jobs.

We can argue all day about whether it was better to have the local shops - maybe sometimes - or whether their demise was caused by internal issues - or whether they were forced out by the bigger store coming in 15 miles away.

The fact is, we have the stores we have,

and when they contract, we have fewer jobs.
 Quoting: beeches

It is about jobs, every business that fails we lose the jobs that the small business provided. when we lose jobit makes competition for the few jobs left out there, failing to find another job puts the unemployed on the dole. We pay for that.

to the ac who says there are plenty of jobs and new businesses in his area, please advertise where that is for the rest of us. thank you.
