By keeping us busy with ANYTHING that will keep us busy doing nothing. Possibly one of the best food producer, for the least amount of effort and cost are egg laying hens, which are symbiotic with a small organic garden. I have my total living expenses down to less than (equal to) $200 a month, and being a person of so many talents I earn that much without even trying. Buying land is totally illogical because I only pay something like $80 a month to rent a large place with a half acre secured walled yard, all utilities included, and better not tie my resources to a fixed property. I used to be an ambitious small but successful manufacturer in the US with millions of dollars grossed per year, I say grossed because I was very generous with my employees who were also my family and with business expenses. A decade ago we packed it all up in a bunch of trucks and moved back to the employees central Mexico. Since then I have found the simple lifestyle of the so-called "poor" people to be more satisfying than anything I knew in the US. I naturally allowed the manufacturing company to shrivel and die away, like once beautiful, but very bothersome wings that became no longer necessary. There was some feeling of panic a few years ago, like as if I were in the US and would be doomed without serious income, but now I am much more at peace, with lots and lots of time to daydream, do creative architecture with no permits required, or nothing at all, with no guilt what so ever, if I choose. Life is less of a drag than it used to be, and at a fraction of the cost. [link to picasaweb.google.com (secure)] Here at the end you see my region. Last Edited by ehecatl on 02/02/2013 05:32 PM |

Life is less of a drag than it used to be, and at a fraction of the cost. Where are you? I am thinking of moving to Ajijc. I have not been to Ajijic yet, but I would like to visit there because it is along a south facing ridge line along giant Lake Chapala which is one of the most popular paraglider flying sites in Mexico. The lake warms up in the day, and produces thermal activity along the lake edge that paraglider pilots fly long into the night, which is a very special experience. Mexico is very regional with different local politics, economies, policing style and safety levels exist in small regions not far apart. Ajijic, Jalisco is one of the regions most heavily populated with American (non-hispanic) ex-patriots. I would not want to live there for that same reason. From what I understand the prices are inflated, and there is more opportunistic crime there, along with a heavier police presence (which means more public extortion often unfortunately) When TSHTF, expect to see some unbridled anti-gringo sentiment. I live in the Tenancingo Valley, Estado de Mexico (not Tlaxcala), same latitude as Cuerna Vaca and reputed to have one of the most favorable climates in the country. Please do not come here. I am one of only about half a dozen "gringos" in the region of several hundred thousand people (aside from a few Mormon missionaries), and practically everyone from the mayor to police, to the indigenous, know me by name and everything about me. (but of course I can't remember the hundreds of thousands of them). I prefer it this way, especially if TSHTF. I don't ever want some racist Mexicans to consider me to be "just one more of those damn gringos". I would rather them think of me as Ehecatl, Sky God, and compadre to all my compañeros, and I always talk in Spanish, and think in Spanish, and to try to adapt myself to this culture, not the other way around. I was born here in Mexico but raised in the US by a non-hispanic mother and a Swedish adoptive father, so my Spanish still has an accent that locals pick up on and identify me as "gringo". I wish you the best with your journey, whereever it takes you, but just saying, Ajijic, Cabo san Lucas, and those sorts of pueblos would be those that I would least want to settle in personally. If you are not Latino, other gringos won't make you safer. To the contrary, they will put you more at risk. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33519260 If you want a clue whether you are on the right path, look around you and see if you are needing less and less "stuff" each day. Are you living lighter, freer and loose? Are you becoming a "minimalist" without really trying? Are you happy with less? Does it just feel right to own, move, carry, store, protect and maintain things? Many today want more! Not me, I want, have and live with less. This attitude will tell you a lot about yourself. Peace I'm afraid that this concept is beyond most people... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 2436690 United States 02/06/2013 01:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | People mistakenly believe that "stuff" will help them feel safer, happier and more secure. When in fact, the "stuff" is their prison. How many times have we heard the story about how someone lost everything and were still happy. We are afraid of the unknown. Of REALLY following our spiritual beliefs. How many people really believe that God is watching out for them? Very few. In fact, you would think that Christians would understand this better than most because of the story of Job. But they don't. Humanity just keeps wanting more, and more and more. While at the same time, they are becoming more and more trapped and unhappy! I just don't get it... |

The magic words used are "growth", "profit", "expansion", "inflation". Those words ALL finite! They have to end some day. Badly I'm afraid. Why not "balance", "perfection" and "sharing"??? The less you have, the less that can cause you pain and suffering? Why? Because it can't be taken or stolen from you. Because you don't have to worry about losing it Because you don't have to protect it. You are not tied to it!!! You are now free to be whatever you want to be. Very, very few I'm afraid... |
