Etch A Sketch inventor Andre Cassagnes dies near Paris
Andre Cassagnes, the inventor of the Etch A Sketch toy that generations of children drew on, shook up and started over, has died in France, the toy’s maker said.

Cassagnes died Jan. 16 in a Paris suburb at age 86, said the Ohio Art Co., based in Bryan in northwest Ohio. The cause wasn’t disclosed Saturday.

You know, I never could figure out how people could make REAL pictures on it! I finally had to throw mine away a few years ago. It was leaking the silver stuff. BUT...it lasted ALOT longer than the ones we got for the kids!

What I thought was cool, as a mom, when my kid's got their Etch-a Sketches, were the little plastic sheets to put over the screen. They were mazes and games. The kids liked them and they really made a difference in hand/eye coordination.

Don't feel too bad about it. They didn't last very long at all. They came in a little envelope, but they never went back in right. They wrinkled up really bad and got ripped up.

Did you ever get to play with the travel ones? THOSE were really hard!!LOL

I guess it was in the late '80's/early'90's that all the travel games were around. They were great! Travelling with small kids for 3 days to get to grandma's with them made life easier.

They used to make travel Battleship, Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots, Sorry, Monopoly, Trouble, pretty all kinds of the Milton Bradley games. The pieces used to get lost alot, though, even though most were magnetic.

I know it isn't the same as an iPad, but at least the dinosaurs weren't roaming the Earth anymore! My kids say they were when I was a kid!

"Say... what really was the color of the dinosaurs?"

I like your Etch A Sketch, shiny and new. I wonder how the wheels would feel between my fingers and thumbs, the grips lightly touching my fingerprints. And the resistance and mechanics feel the small tip draw a metallic bead. Synching X and Y, Y an X. Have you tried it upside down. The wheels look like eyes. The shiny new gold, letters almost too thickly coated, just one tiny scratch, shiny red plastic. Silver talc.
