Gay chicken
I've been trying to decide what to do with a rooster that has a preference for other roosters.

Some of my thoughts are he doesn't really contribute much to the flock.

He is kinda rough on the other roosters, they are loosing feather on the top of the head and neck where he holds them to do his business. He's a bully.

He is bigger than the other roosters.

Not much on the positive side. He's beautiful.

I haven't killed any chickens yet. I have them for eggs and kind of a hobby.

So, what are your thoughts?

Re: Gay chicken
Sometimes those nasty ones are the best protectors of the ladies of the flock. The only thing I found that works is a punishment pen. LOL. A little pen, that when they start doing that, they get a time out. They have food, water, and shelter, but no companionship...except for the loyal ladies that will wait outside the pen for his return. After a few outings in the punishment pen, which is a covered chain link dog pen, mine mended his ways...at least when he knew I was watching.

I started with a day, then worked up to a week. Don't know if it was coincidence, but he stopped but stayed a good defender of his girls. rooster1

This has to be a joke thread on a one only meant for the ones that know the code.

Don't have more than one rooster on a chicken yard, the biggest rooster will jump the smaller ones, until they kill them or maim them.

Mine get along fine. You're right, that's the ideal, but as long as there are enough hens for the roosters, each rooster has certain hens that hang with him. The only problem is when one thinks he can have another roosters ladies. They get put in their place and life in the chicken yard goes on.

no joke, I've got 22 hens that are a year old. I hatched a batch that are 6 months old and 6 of them are roosters. I like nines advice. I'll catch him in the act and move him to a time out cage.

I let them free range during the day but lock them up at night. Hopefully he will comprehend his confinement is due to behavior. Killing him is the last thing I want to do.
