Having been down to the US several times over the last few months, things didn't look bad. Saw lots of people spending lots of money; Phoenix and Seattle appeared quite active and the tourist money in Vegas was flowing fast.

Re: Why are all these stores closing nation wide, if the stock market is up and things are peachy?
I mistakenly thought Romney would win and there would be a bounce so I dived in to the market right before the election. I took a hit and had to stay in to recover my loss but now I've made that bounce anyway. I'm going to jump out again before the bottom falls out but I think a lot of people are just going into the market because so much money is sitting on the sidelines and they feel the need to invest again. Interest rates are stupid low so bonds can't even hope to keep pace with inflation. My two pennies anyway...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1277109

Just because there are inflows into the market doesnt mean that it is retail investors. Remember the unlimited QE4ever that was announced last fall. I think you are seeing a surge in the stock market because the bond market is about to collapse and people are smart enough that they are buying precious metals to "get their money returned" instaed of "making a return". When people are waiting on the sidelines with gazzilions of dollars were do you think that money is sitting ? in money market accounts right ? where is the money invested by the banks that are in those accounts? "THE MARKET" The problem is that 10K baby boomers a day are retiring what are they doing to finance that retirement? "selling stocks, bonds and equities" right?
Whom is there to purchase those sold financial instruments to even support the prices much less increase the value of those sold assets >?

I keep telling everyone that the economy and jobs are being put on hold because the inflation created from a healthy fractional lending system is not wanted because the money changers can't steer or direct that money directly into the banks to save them from insolvency.

The money that they print they can focus like a beam to keep the illusions and balance sheets solvent. Theree will be no employment as long as there are losses atill to be realised.

It's easy to say everything is peachy during the holiday season when people feel obliged to spend what they have and what they don't have on gifts.

Now it's Feb and the temporary holiday help has been let go at these big stores and everyone is back to tightening their belts because things are far from peachy.

Consummer confidence is down because most people are not prospering atm. It's the months after the holiday spending season is over that the state of the economy is most apparent.

I have changed my shopping habits. Changed several years ago. I don't support the large illum. corps., i.e. Target, Walmart and others. I also buy off brand items, food, etc. I just can't support companies that are planning our demise.

Of course, sometimes it is impossible to avoid buying at these places for certain things, but I try to avoid it in general.

I'm surprised the numbers aren't larger actually. It's only because shopping online has skyrocketed, people don't need stores with staged merchandise and knowledgable staff; people just look up what they want to buy, and pull up reviews, look for cheapest price and buy, saving money when with shipment to thier front door.

What really needs to start happening, with the world becoming so automated, we need communism and everything to cost nothing.

2,190 stores closing

What do you think the average number of employees at each store is? Some of these are big, some are small, so let's do an average of 30 employees per store.

THat's 70,000 people who will no longer be shopping in a nation consumed by consumption so much so, that 72% of our economy is based off of consumption.

These are dominoes falling.

I thought the stock market was up, and things were peachy and every one was loving higher taxes, obamacare, a collapsing dollar, and millions leaving the work force?
 Quoting: GodFrequency

Stores close, even in peachy times, when their business models become obsolete. Blockbuster, for example, closed stores not because people weren't renting movies, but because people were renting movies over the Internet rather than drive to a Blockbuster store.

The problem with conspiracy theorists is that they are SO focussed on proving one theory that they rarely consider the multitude of other possible explanations for a given scenario.
 Quoting: phoomp

Folks, we are in the throes of a changing paradigm. As someone else mentioned, the INTERNET is what's driving many of the changes. First take a look at old media. By old media, I am referring to newspapers, magazines, local television, local terrestrial radio and more. All of these delivery systems are dying. Why? Because there is a new delivery system which allows consumers to get the content they want without participating in the business model of these industries. The new delivery system is the INTERNET.

Now for the failing big box stores and other businesses. People have started to do their shopping on-line or via the INTERNET. Why go to any store to purchase certain items when you can visit Amazon on-line and order what you want. Usually the price is less and the shipping may be free in some cases.

So, things they are a changing. Regressive policies or laws will not halt the change. Many people are going to become unemployed perhaps permanently dues to these changes.

The best thing any of us can do in my opinion is:

Determine if and how/where you can fit in to the new paradigm of online activity.

Decide what you want to do on a long term basis.

Pursue your dreams, you will be amazed what you can accomplish once you stop worrying about the past.

Do not participate in the orgy of debt the banks are promoting.

Live as simply as you can while still being comfortable.

Good luck to all! I offer these suggestions in a totally positive sense.

Re: Why are all these stores closing nation wide, if the stock market is up and things are peachy?
It's a lot worse than we are being told.

As someone else posted, Zimbabwe's stock market spiked before everything crashed due to hyperinflation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33509675

That exactly right, because what is Hyperinflation?

Most people think and say its printing too much money. That is not true as we have printed trillions and that money has not made it back to the real economy. So you ask where is it then. The money they have printed has been the steerable or direct-able type of money which is just printed up and given to where they (the money printers) have all of their generational wealth, and where is that ? in the banking and financial system. That money is sitting on the banking worlds balance sheet to replace reserve losses to give the world an appearance of solvency. So, you can see that it is not spent or distributed through the lending system because then it would be in the real economy and create inflation. The other place they are steering this printed money is the stock market. There was a thread the other day with a video about how the money changers are injecting 4 Billion dollars a day into the market.

That is why the economy of the world has been suspended to the determent of the masses and for the benefit of the money changers. The healthy inflation that we want that is created through the fractional lending system (un-steerable or unfocusable) is in direct competition with the freshly printed money that they are distributing (steerable and focusable on whatever they deem necessary)This is why these stores are closing and why the job market is shrinking. If you combined that unsteerable inflation from the fraction reserve lending system with the outright printing of money that is 100% steerable and able to be focused the American dollar would be hyper inflated out of existence within a few weeks. Hyperinflation is not only massive printing but also is a loss of confidence of the fiat currency system and people fight each other to get rid of it first, by purchasing goods/assets that will hold value over the long term that have inherent properties of not spoiling, rotting, deteriorating and degrading over time. Gold/Silver is a good example. The problem is that with the mad rush into precious metals the money that purchases the real physical metals causes even more inflation because what does that money go that just purchased that stash of metals ? (study the Gold market and situation in India right now and you will understand 100%)

Here is the Wikipedia explanation of the fraction lending system:

Example of deposit multiplication

The table below displays the relending model of how loans are funded and how the money supply is affected. It also shows how central bank money is used to create commercial bank money from an initial deposit of $100 of central bank money. In the example, the initial deposit is lent out 10 times with a fractional-reserve rate of 20% to ultimately create $500 of commercial bank money (it is important to note that the 20% reserve rate used here is for ease of illustration, actual reserve requirements are usually a lot lower, for example around 3% in the USA and UK). Each successive bank involved in this process creates new commercial bank money on a diminishing portion of the original deposit of central bank money. This is because banks only lend out a portion of the central bank money deposited, in order to fulfill reserve requirements and to ensure that they always have enough reserves on hand to meet normal transaction demands.

The relending model begins when an initial $100 deposit of central bank money is made into Bank A. Bank A takes 20 percent of it, or $20, and sets it aside as reserves, and then loans out the remaining 80 percent, or $80. At this point, the money supply actually totals $180, not $100, because the bank has loaned out $80 of the central bank money, kept $20 of central bank money in reserve (not part of the money supply), and substituted a newly created $100 IOU claim for the depositor that acts equivalently to and can be implicitly redeemed for central bank money (the depositor can transfer it to another account, write a check on it, demand his cash back, etc.). These claims by depositors on banks are termed demand deposits or commercial bank money and are simply recorded in a bank's accounts as a liability (specifically, an IOU to the depositor). From a depositor's perspective, commercial bank money is equivalent to central bank money – it is impossible to tell the two forms of money apart unless a bank run occurs.[3]

At this point in the relending model, Bank A now only has $20 of central bank money on its books. The loan recipient is holding $80 in central bank money, but he soon spends the $80. The receiver of that $80 then deposits it into Bank B. Bank B is now in the same situation as Bank A started with, except it has a deposit of $80 of central bank money instead of $100. Similar to Bank A, Bank B sets aside 20 percent of that $80, or $16, as reserves and lends out the remaining $64, increasing money supply by $64. As the process continues, more commercial bank money is created. To simplify the table, a different bank is used for each deposit. In the real world, the money a bank lends may end up in the same bank so that it then has more money to lend out.

the media has positioned everyone of obama's agenda as the only agenda which is acceptable in today's PC society.
any and all opposition to obama and the left are declared evil or just ramblings from the fringe kooks.

Re: Why are all these stores closing nation wide, if the stock market is up and things are peachy?
I see allot of posts regarding the pumping of the stock market. They say that TPTB are pumping money in to give the illusion.

Let's ask why that is necessary ? Let's look at a stock and see how it flows through the system. Company A wants to go public so they have an IPO to raise money for the company balance sheets. People buy up the IPO and the money flows to the company while the market makers extract the VIG. What happens when someone sells that stock but there is no one there to purchase it ? The value drops right ? until someone buys it the price will continue to drop (price discovery) What if there are no bids to purchase ? Well, either the company that issued the stock starts a buyback or the company fails ? Why? because the public stock that the company has is considered an asset on their balance sheets because of the money flow that was created from the IPO. The market must be goosed because if company A's sales are down the only way to "grow" that balance sheet and give the illusion of solvency. If no one wants the stock the price must fall thereby lowering the valuation or net worth of that company.

They are injecting the 4 billion a day to expand the corporate balance sheets so that the valuations increase in a shrinking market, therefore the balance sheet it boosted by the valuation and creates the illusion of increased earnings, cash and net worth.

This whole charade is going to fail at some point. The problem is that most of the people that have forecasted this for years have underestimated the power of the printing press.
