Re: uk bedroom tax,the road to riots
It's not as drastic as OP is making out. Basically people in social housing, with more bedrooms than they use will be asked to pay up or relocate. They will be allowed to sublet the spare room to cover the tax if they choose to. I agree with OP's sentiment but this is not the spark we need.
 Quoting: NSF001

They won't be "asked" to pay, they'll be told.
And they'll be "allowed" to sublet.

Geezuz, being a subject must be nauseating.
 Quoting: Professor Xavier

Bear in mind this only applies to government subsidised housing. You own your house you can have ten spare bedrooms if you like. Imagine it was across the board though, think of the bill for Buckingham palace
 Quoting: NSF001

Exactly. There really is no problem. If you are going to take from the government then the government should be able to tell you what to do. People in government housing should be thankful they even have a roof over their heads. Or if they aren't then they could live in a shelter or on the streets.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

maybe that is where the next riot will come from. from the disenfranchised scroungers who feel that after years of free living, now are having the rug swept out from under their feet, and they will be pissed!!!!!

This only affects benefit spongers anyway.

Get real. Yes those people exist but there will be thousands of families around the country that will face having to move out of the house which their children have grew up in due to them not being able to afford this 'tax'. How is that fair?

Interesting point about removing the bed... Surely slimy osbourne will have a work around for that.

I wonder where the real spark will come from?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2293376

If they don't want to deal with this then they need to support themselves and quit living off of tax payers money. Problem solved.

It is 1 change of many. Our Welfare State to us is like the 2nd ammendment is to the Americans. Take it away and see what will happen ;)

Also part of the changes coming up is that Housing Benefit will be given directly to the claimant and not the landlords or councils. This is obviously going to lead to evictions and mass homelessness

True. These people should be happy they have a place to live with taxpayers taking care of them. People living off of others get an entitlement attitude and this is what is happening here. They need to be grateful and they aren't. Losers.

You guys think its hard now, SHEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIT.

If im right this is only the start. The next 20 years will make the great depression and WW2 look like a fucking walk in the park.

All i can fucking suggest is get your shit in order start growing your own food and invest in something like precious metals to hedge your wealth, and keep that shit on the fucking quiet, dont even tell anybody you dont trust 100% because even family will turn on you when their own kids start starving.

Stay the fuck out of politics because you will just make yourself a target for the other side.

When it gets really bad, blend the fuck in and walk around, que for food like everybody else is handouts and just dont bring attention to yourself.

I think this is basically just a tax to claw back some of the money from people they couldn't house in smaller accommodation; because it either wasn't available to house them at the time, or they lived under different circumstances at the time of the initial rent agreement.

CHAV TAX

So, are we going to be paying their moving expenses every few years as family size changes? I get the feeling this makes no sense at all. It's probably just intended to keep communities transitory.

You live in a transitory country. People move in and out of neighborhoods every year as their income and situation changes.

it's fair because if they were supported in social housing to raise a family - and now they have- then now they scale down and allow that housing to be used by another younger family who need the support of social housing to raise their family

if they didn't opt to buy that house and it's social housing then why should they sit in it , with empty rooms

with other people paying for their sentimentality

that isn;t fair

Hey, US should be paying attention. If this will work for UK, then what may possibly happen to the illegal - soon to be legal immigrants that keep coming to the US? Where they going to live?
 Quoting: Indysmindy

They already do that in the US. If you are in government housing and your income goes up, you get kicked out. If the number of people in your home changes, you have to move to a different unit that year, if not sooner.

Re: uk bedroom tax,the road to riots
What is "council housing"? Is that like section 8 in the U.S.?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23554071

Not sure what section 8 is...

Basically the local government owns the houses and rents them out.

Depending on the location they can be rented out to people who pay their own way by working etc, but they are often rented to people who dont pay anything because welfare pays for it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33792358

Then these people should get no choice. I know if the government was paying for my house and asked me to move to another I would in an instant.

...and here's the fucking kicker. those of us that worked hard and sacrificed for everything we have will eventually become targets because anger begets jealousy.

Labour/Conservative/Lib Dem/UKIP its all irrelevant so long as nobody is taking responsibility for the state of welfare spending in this country.

I get the impression Nigel Farage knows how bad this is, but he cant admit it because the sheeple will never accept how bad this shit has gotten untill as you phrased it " the rug will be swept out from under them"

I honestly think the NHS is dead, its in a coma and they are pretending they know how to bring it back.

Its gone... and thats just the start. The police cuts, the council cuts, the outsourcing.... its going to keep coming and coming.

They are going to print money and cut what they can but its just delaying the inevitable.

We are going to hit victorian and edwardian levels of poverty in this country within the next two decades.

but that is exactly the problem now with this dependency culture that has emanated. i am sure that social housing was originally conceptualised for the exact purpose that you outlined. however, now, it is not being used any more as a last resort, for when hard times may befall. rather, it is increasingly viewed as a lifestyle choice. the problem is further exascerbated by wholesale immigration, but let us not forget that this culture of entitlement exists today within our society.

But really you should because let's say you had a family and lost your job or some sort of hardship really hit you. And you needed government help. And most people never think this will happen to them but it does. But there is no place for you because one person living in a house that has a couple extra rooms s/he doesn't need won't move. You would want them relocated fast so you could have a place for you and your family to stay. That is what it looks like is happening here and these people need an incentive to get up and move. Not all people in council houses are freeloaders but they all need to make room for others who may be in a worse situation. It is only fair.
