I have a PhD in Physics and make $168,000 a year. I must be one of the lucky ones.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15341514

Yeah, I just finished an undergrad-degree in physics, and I have no trouble finding work. I'm also a skilled machinist and electronics expert, but that goes along with physics. I think if you are a hard worker who can solve problems instead of create them you should have no trouble. Getting my-self through the physics degree was a grueling slog though. My experience in college was that 90% of the folks there were there to fuck off and party. Their loss I suppose.

sickening...i dont have shit and i'm not out chasing assistance.
 Quoting: DesinzitizedSleepWalker9978

I fully agree. I personally don't have much left over after bills are paid but I do not go running to the government begging. In fact I find it strange how many blacks can go sign up for food stamps and welfare checks yet can afford designer clothes, and hairdo's along with fancy finger nails with gemstones. Oh and the cars they ride around in make me sick. I still have a 20 year old car and can't afford anything new, yet they can afford a brand new car once a year. I mean WTF?

First of all, what kind of degrees are we talking about? Liberal arts? A P.H.D. in philosophy? I mean, give me a break. I bet there's nobody with a Nursing degree out of work. We all make our choices in life. Too many times people have been told fairy tales about "you can be anything you want to be" and "reach for the stars". Well thats all great and everything, but make sure you have something to fall back on before you chase your dream in Horticulture.
 Quoting: BossBitch

Yes and no. You're right about nursing and I agree with your analysis.

This guy however has degrees in Plasma Physics and Electrical Engineering...

There is nothing wrong with getting advanced degrees. The problem is that universities have turned into diploma farms. No longer are advanced degrees reserved for those brightest and most applied individuals. Now anybody with decent grades can go to grad school. Compounding the problem is grade inflation. Today more students are earning better grades. This makes the pool of not particularly deserving grad students even larger.

There was once a time when a professor typically took on just 5 or 6 Ph.D students in his/her entire career. Now some professors have that many at any given time.

Not to mention all the bs degrees.

I'm all for undergraduate and graduate education. The system is failing, however.

No wonder people in the Financial industry are so fooking clueless. There is no way an MBA earned online provides the background or knowledge base to make remotely sound managerial decisions.

It's not a useless degree, but I've even stopped working on my masters in engineering that I was paying for out of pocket. It's a waste of time. I've taken three welding courses in the last year, building on existing skills, and I can say much better bang for my buck.

I thank God, I did not pursue a graduate degree in chemistry.

One of the ideas being put out there in the media is that it's insane that foreign students who get degrees from our universities are then not allowed to stay here. They have to go back to their own country. We're being told that's bad.

I wonder if unemployed Americans with degrees would agree with that.

Yes, we Americans come last here in our own country. We don't matter and we don't count.

And after amnesty, unemployed Americans with degrees will have to compete with 30 million wetbacks for ordinary working class jobs!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25531744

The problem might be the address on your resume might be the same address as your parents. Never let a prospective employer know you are living with your parents as an adult. It can hurt your job chances.

Also these things help to find jobs after college. Might be too late for you.
*You should have joined a Fraternity. A Frat brother will always hire a fellow brother, even if they werent even close to being in school the same year.
* You should have interned during grad school. My first corporate job was as an intern at an investment banking firm, while getting my MBA. My second corporate job was for the same company, for 70 grand a year, after I got my MBA.
*Join a big church. The one where most of the successful people go. Church is a great business networking tool. And a fellow church member will hire someone from his church, before some stranger.
* For god sake. Move out of your parents house! Find a way. Hell, my 19 year old son only works part time at walmart, and fixes computers, xboxes and iphones in his spare time, and he can afford his own condo with a room mate.

There are plenty of jobs out there for the educated. You just have to have a good personal business network to find those jobs. "Its all who you know"<<< true words about the job market. If you dont know anyone...get out there and meet them!

Welding is great, because you generally are going to be actually building something, I.E. production imagine that! Creating steel objects happens to be a great skill. While "better living through chemistry" might be true, steel is real.

When I use to be a squatter I met a few professors and grad students who were living the homeless lifestyle. Many of them were on the street by choice, not due to drug/alcohol addiction but because they were just tired of the system and decided to use it for all it's worth while traveling and living the free lifestyle with no work that they desired.

Re: Hundreds of thousands of Master's degree holders, PhDs on food stamps
I have master's from as major university and an undergraduate degree from another significant state university.

Not on food stamps because I grow food in my garden. The only job I've been able to find is working 10-12 hours a week in a local restaurant.

Getting by just barely because my expenses are low (house stays cold) and everything is paid for, including my 13 year old car. Have one small rental property that brings in a couple hundred a month.

It is bare bones living, but healthy and reasonably comfortable in spite of being a little cold.

I am FURIOUS over the excessive spending by local, state and federal government. Not so much about food and housing assistance, but about the corporate rake-offs.

Which just goes to show if you don't learn something useful that someone wants it's hard to find a job. On the other hand if these people go to trade school or go back and become something like an RN they can find work because of the health care shortage.

I recall asking someone who was getting a Ph.D. in Philosophy what he planned to do with that degree because the only thing one could really do is become a professor. He didn't have a clue.

Degrees that are worthwhile are in finance, science, computer technology, engineering, etc. But even more important people also need to think along the lines of self-employment where skills are marketable.

Even beauticians and mechanics make more money then some of these other higly educated other folks.

I have a PHD - and unemployed. I qualify for food stamps - but don't take them.

Instead, grew a garden. Learned to can. Learned to stretch the $$, stopped eating JUNK. I eat better now than I did when I had a JOB.

NO foodstamps.

Re: Hundreds of thousands of Master's degree holders, PhDs on food stamps
Shelling out tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars for higher education may no longer be the surefire path to a great career that it used to be. A recent report compiled by the education resource group OnlineColleges.net found that more than 300,000 Americans with either Master's degrees or Ph.D.s were receiving food stamps in 2010 -- and many more are likely on some form of government assistance today as economic conditions since that time have only continued to worsen.

To give a point of reference as to how bad the situation truly is, there were fewer than 100,000 Americans with Master's degrees or Ph.D.s on food stamps in 2007, which means the overall number of people with extensive college educations on government assistance more than tripled in just three years. And if this trend continued at the same rate between 2010 and 2013, the total number of college educated on government assistance today has easily eclipsed more than half a million, and with no end in sight.

According to the latest government data, more than 5,000 people working right now as custodians have Ph.D.s they are not using, and another more than 100,000 people with at least a bachelor's degree currently work in some sort of custodial position. A whopping 80,000-or-so people with at least a bachelor's degree also currently work as attendants at amusement parks and other recreational facilities, while nearly 320,000 college graduates currently work as servers at restaurants and cafes.

"According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, roughly one in three college graduates works in a job the Labor Department says requires less than a bachelor's degree,"

Re: Hundreds of thousands of Master's degree holders, PhDs on food stamps
I think I would take that study with a grain of salt. My daughter has a masters and is working towards her PhD. She gets paid as a grad assistant, but the pay is stinky and the Masters/PhD program takes five years! So, one would assume quite a few of those with Masters/PhDs are actually working towards another Masters or PhD. She happens to make too much to qualify (I told her to look into it). But, many don't make even what she does and many other grad students aren't being paid for their work at all. Yet, they have to eat.

Also, when it comes to PhDs, there is a section of the population who are very bright, but lack all other skills (common sense, people skills, etc.). They don't have the emotional make-up to really work at a job, so they get their PhD. You know, those with Aspergers or those like Ted Kaczynski.

My brother-in-law has a BS in business but his first love has always been mechanics. He has a job keeping an electrical plant running. He actually gets paid quite good money but I suppose that could be considered some type of a custodial position. In fact, most people in such a position have a BS and a staff working for them. Still, they are technically custodians (a person who guards or maintains a property).

Just saying - you can find or manipulate statistics to agree with pretty much any argument if you try hard enough.

My child will be college age in another 5 years. I plan on letting him do dual enrollment in high school do he can get some free college credits before he graduates, but I don't know what to encourage him to do after that. I have long since lost faith in the American University system. Getting tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, in to debt doesn't seem like a smart way to start a young life. This is especially true when that debt doesn't do anything to guarantee a good job.
My husband doesn't have a degree, but he makes a decent living, and he got there by working his butt off and working his way up in the company.
