If PM did this at a time he stood to lose everything and decided to leave his wife with the experience of losing all she held dear in return (there is some evidence she was attempting to leave him)...then killing the dog would make sense especially if she played into a special memory of acquiring the dog and the dog was part of the irreplaceable family unit.
