No beer at the corner store all government controlled stores!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1518839

That depends on the province. In Quebec, you can buy beer or cider at your corner store, or have it delivered.

In Alberta, there are almost as many liquor stores as there are convenience stores. Many are opened till 2:00 AM. Because there are so many Lebanese in my neighbourhood, I can get Middle Eastern Arak at the store down the block.

You can also get marijuana delivered to your door, but I can't use it because of employment drug testing. That's another thing that sucks here.

The only thing worse than the blackflies, mosquitoes, deerflies, and no-see-ums are the people whining about them,... especially when they try to get city council to spray toxic shit all over the river valley because they don't like flies. Those idiots should stay inside if it bothers them so much.

i live in alberta, the worst place i've ever lived.the gov't is so fucked up here it's unreal they let landlords raise the rent any amount they want,it used to be 2 times a year now they only let them raise it any amount once a year.my monthly rent went up 2 hundred $ at once.
the gov't wont let anyone living here trade currencies online.
the gov't lets companies get around discrimination laws by getting new hires to sign a waiver of their rights for drug and alcohol testing.the list goes on and on.

Except that in Canadian Tire, they still seem to work as if they appreciate the job.

Go into a Home Depot and the cashiers are fine, hard working, but try and get help in a department and 8 times out of 10 they look at you like you owe them money and are greatly inconveniencing them by daring to ask for assistance, eye rolls and sighs and all.

They should announce "2000 layoffs planned at Home Depot Canada" as a profilactic measure to get some of these complacent government job wannabes back into reality mode.

Re: Hey Canadians: What is the WORST thing about living in Canada?
Here is what i love about Canada:

-Beautiful Diverse (many untouched) landscapes.

Here is why I would prefer not to live in Canada:

-Winter drives me nuts (even the very mild winters in my micro climate)
-It seems like there are 10x more sheeple here than anywhere else. You think your left right thing in the states is bad? Well we have it here too.
-These sheeple are all set in their ways. Stubborn fucking idiots.
-People in bigger cities (mostly Toronto) Think they are the shit.
-People from outside the country are usually condescending toward you because they generally believe you are uncultured and therefore naive and stupid. (They need to listen to Terrance M.)
-The education system is shit. It tries to make people into mindless working grunts unless you have money for private school.
-The government taxes the shit out of you.
-It takes 100 years for any decision to be made.
-We have a queen that owns most of our land.
-The land that people own is owned by foreigners, big business, or old farmer families that horde all their land, never selling it, never using it.

I am sure I can think of many other reasons that Canada is shit.

Oh yes, also...

We have basically fucked over all the natives. Everyone up here in Canada is cool with it though. Many of us look at Natives as useless users of government money.

Well... really they've been manipulated and segregated into ghettos and are poor, drug addicted, sad souls. On top of it they have been given a bad name.

It is so sad what has been done to them. There is oppression like this in many countries, but nobody ever talks about it in the seriousness it deserves.

Ever since we settled here we have been fucking them over. We steal their natural, balanced resources, and make them rely on stupid government programs.

The MSM talks about it, but in a way in which you think that they are just your every day citizens with some drug problems because they live in low income communities. That is just part of it.

Re: Hey Canadians: What is the WORST thing about living in Canada?
Grew up in Winnipeg. Lived in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, San Francisco, NYC, Indianapolis, Chicago and Los Angeles. Main differences between two countries:

1. Consumer prices generally higher in Canada. Taxes higher too. Regardless of whatever stats you can pull out about purchasing power parity (PPP), the US has a greater selection of cheaper stuff.

2. On health care: I'm unconvinced Canada's medical system is better, even for the poor. I'm sure this varies geographically but in Chicago I was uninsured when I caught a serious infection which required hospitalization. After 8 hours in the waiting room at Stroger I received first-class treatment including a CT scan. They told me not to worry about the bill. There are a lot of free and inexpensive medical services in the U.S., and a lot more choice. Prescription drugs, however, are almost always cheaper in Canada.

3. Psychologically, Canadians are neurotically timid; Americans tend to be almost psychopathically audacious in personality. This is surely an overgeneralization but I find, for example, people to be louder & livelier on the Chicago El or the NYC Subway than on Toronto's subway or Vancouver's SkyTrain. Americans have a sort of base level of assertiveness, while Canadians tend more toward the passive-aggressive.

4. Canadian Language, outside Quebec & Newfoundland, is more or less homogeneous and devoid of local dialects. Accents vary by class but not really by region. American language tends to be more colorful & direct, and I'd say the average American is in fact more articulate than the typical Canadian, who tends to be a mumbler.

5. Smaller and mid-sized Canadian cities tend to have much better transit services than similarly sized American ones. Major routes on Indianapolis's bus system run every half hour even during rush hour and quit at 9 o'clock. Meanwhile Calgary has an LRT system with a daily ridership over 250k.

6. Outside Quebec and Alberta, Liquor laws in Canada are absolutely retarded. In Ontario you can only purchase hard stuff from provincially owned Liquor Stores, beer only from the liquor stores or a private concession monopoly called The Beer Store (ugh). When I left BC in 2004 they were in the process of liberalizing the liquor laws but I haven't researched how far exactly that went.

7. Americans, if they think of Canada at all, mention it as some place they'd like to visit some day. If you're a New Yorker, maybe you'll want to ski at Mont Tremblant or stroll Old Montreal; if you're a Coloradan, perhaps you'll speak of all the great things you've heard about Calgary/Banff. Canadians, on the other hand, usually speak disdainfully about Americans and American cities, even as they openly worship American pop culture. It's very hypocritical. Still, even as Canadians flock to Vegas or run cross-border shopping missions in Buffalo or Bellingham, most would sooner spend their cash on a visit to an all-inclusive in Mexico.

8. In border towns, Canadians are known to be cheap tippers. They think 10% is just fine, whereas Americans tend to go with 15-20%. True story.

Insurance is pretty bad up here for sure. For me it is anyway.

Where I live there's only 1 tax (Alberta is debt free thanks to our oil) where the other provinces have both federal and provincial taxes.

There really isn't much to seriously dislike about living in Canada at all. The pros FAR outweigh the cons.

Compared to most other countries (not using any names... you countries know who you are...), we're doing pretty good up here...

I know most of you are filled with Nationalistic pride.
I think that is great.
But there are downsides to everyplace.
For instance, I've read that almost 90% of you all live within 100 miles of the USA border. I live within 15 miles
So yeah, it gets cold and you have Winter.

What else?
Do you need a supplementary health insurance policy? No. But for private and semi private rooms it helps.
Is car insurance mandatory? ( I imagine so) How much? I pay about 25$ a month for liability for 1 car and 35$ for the other. Yes. $67 / month for $2 Million liability, full fire, theft, comprehensive. Guaranteed replacement of one year newer if I write it off. Clean record and am allowed one claim of any size without rate increase.
Is food taxed? Only if prepared. Usually for junk like donuts. Most is tax free.
I've seen property taxes are nearly comparable to Wisconsin. (Expensive- 2,0-3,0% mil rates) I pay $2500 on a #250,000K house. Too much where I live. My 250K house would go for $1 million in some of the big cities. 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, garage, finished basement
Tobacco and booze are way more expensive than here. Yes that is why I buy all of my booze in your country. I don't smoke.
Do you pay tax on Internet purchases? No
Can you buy stuff easily from the states via the Interwebs?
Yes
OK, lots of questions- just curious.
Thanks in advance.
