A newly discovered asteroid called 2012 DA14 will pass so close to Earth in February that it might hit a communications satellite, scientists say.
"That's very unlikely, but we can't rule it out," said Paul Chodas, a planetary astronomer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.

On February 15 a chunk of rock about 50 meters wide will whiz by Earth at nearly 8 km/s, coming within 27,680 km of our planet’s surface — closer than many weather and communications satellites.
For those of you more comfortable with imperial units, that’s 165 feet wide traveling 17,800 mph coming within 17,200 miles. But regardless whether you prefer meters or miles, in astronomy that’s what’s called a close call.

Here is what I think will happen. They have known about this Asteroid for close to a year and have been tracking it ever since.

It will not hit the earth, but what it might do is take out a few satellites which hopefully will burn up as they fall back into the atmosphere. If it does hit a satellite or two there could be some serious communication problems, ie. GPS systems go down, etc.

My other concern is, as it departs what sort of pull will it put on our planet. I'm going on earthquake watch after DA14 makes its closest approach.

It would be extremely unlikely that it would hit any, but if it did the debris would be at very high altitudes and remain up there for millenia. That's the real problem, in fact.

The wrong side of earth will be facing the close approach unfortunately.

Thanks Astro! As you know, it's amazing how much space junk is circling the planet. As far as the approach goes, I wish it was on our side. Wouldn't it be cool if NASA could embed a cam on the asteroid so our eyes could hitch a ride into space. :)

It's going to hit Texas because it is the biggest state, therefore the largest gravity pull, duhhh.

My thoughts as well. Have you heard of a famous so called
"rogue astronomer/psychiatrist" named Immanuel Velokosvsky?
He has some interesting things to say about our "hidden
past"--have a couple of his videos posted on my threads.
He was friends with Einstein and old E. was said to have been reading "Worlds in Collision" on his death bed....
so you know E. took the guy seriously. His book called:
"World in Collision" was made popular again in the 1990's
by Sitchin--the fellow who brought us the info on the
alien origins and the Ananaki. The new movie "Promethius"
is based losely on some of Sitchin and Velokovsky's work.
Long and short of it...Yeah...we've been hit before...
we will be hit again. Just hope you aren't the flea on
the dog's back who gets the first dusting of flea powder,
right?
