Impact Probability 1.3e-10 Which means from link 0.000000013% chance of Earth impact or 1 in 7,692,308,000 chance or 99.99999999% chance the asteroid will miss the Earth. No, they do not automatically update themselves. I'm still running an old version of FindOrb on my desktop and it has never changed itself. I'm running a slightly newer version on my laptop, but it yields the same results as using the desktop. Don't be a duche. And if you actually watched the video to begin with you would know that FindOrb performs its monte carlos solutions by adding gaussian noise to the data. That's deliberate. It'll never be the same twice because the noise is by its nature random. Only the general shape of the distribution will be the same. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16663041 Yeah, ORSA provides the ability to download asteroid orbital elements, etc if desired by the user. Neither of them automatically update themselves, however. Both are open source as well, so if you claim it does, then show me where in the source code it does. |

Halcyon Dayz, FCD User ID: 31033756 Netherlands 02/12/2013 02:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | physic law just say that the speed of falling is the same for every mass. Quoting: French Coward 34240632 Do you understand why that is? (And it's acceleration of falling, btw.) but if this asteroid is bigger, its trajectory will be altered by earth gravity. and alter this asteroid speed too Quoting: French Coward 34240632 Big cannonball, small cannonball. Drop them and they will hit the ground at the same moment. Big asteroid, small asteroid. Falling at the same acceleration towards Earth. In orbital mechanics when one object has insignificant mass compared to the primary its mass can be ignored in the calculations. You still get accurate results. The reason for this is that smaller object doesn't have any effect on the primary, IOW the asteroid doesn't move Earth closer to it, it is only Earth that pulls the asteroid closer to it. And we know exactly how much. Don't be a duche. Just reinstall and plug in your variables if they match no worries if they don't match someone is futzing with the calculations. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16663041 It's easy enough to check if the math module of such software still works correctly. If it were EVERY POSITION given for EVERY OTHER CELESTIAL BODY would be WRONG. Reaching for the sky makes you taller. Hi! My name is Halcyon Dayz and I'm addicted to morans. |

Compared to the earth that is. Chances are, even if it did hit, it would be no where near you or me. Imagine a football field, then imagine throwing a rock onto the field. Where it lands, is the same chance of it landing near you. No worries friend. We'll live to see another day. |

Quoting: Son of PC 33127834 Let me go first. UT Austin. OK, show and tell DR. Astro. If I told you, 5 seconds of googling would reveal my name and address since very, very few people in my state get a PhD through this particular university. As a result, it was somewhat newsworthy when I entered the program. In fact the third link took me almost right to myself. The information from there can be used to narrow me down to one of two people and since only one of the two of us successfully completed the program, it narrows it the rest of the way down right to me. I know a few people on the higher up scale that said it was orginally not supposed to hit but it has been confirmed their data was dead wrong.
