You need to consider the velocity it is approaching us at. If the asteroid was travelling much (much) slower then I would agree with you (earths gravity pulling it in).

Peoples This thing is moving 10-12 thousand miles per second
There is no way the Earth's gravitational pull could draw it in.
It is moving was too fast
If you look at when they shoot up the space shuttle they have to pick up speed to pull out of the earth's gravity
So with this moving this fast
there is no stopping it and if it hits earth it has to be a direct hit or glancing blow but not Gravitational pull.

I have eastern time flyby at 2.24pm some say 2.30 .would 6 minutes earlier give us repent time ? Where are the mid class bunkers ?
