You would think that they would run from just hearing that one single Bible verse, and we all know that there are thousands of similar verses. I always wonder what has been wired wrong in the Christian brain? How can they be really intelligent in some ways and then so darn stupid in others? I really thought he was out there on one special night, and I thought he would have no problem delivering gifts to every kid in the world. I didn't even think about the fact that one man in a sled could never be capable of this, but then I was a kid. I believed in magic. I thought Santa could see me and hear me, and if I was bad, I thought I would receive a lump of coal. I thought elves and flying reindeer existed. But then I GREW UP? Why can't they see the obvious? Why? The fear. That's why. It has them locked in. They WILL NOT admit it but it is the fear. I know. I was a Christian for 18 years. I didn't want to admit it either. I didn't want to face the hard questions. I didn't want to truly investigate the things that all those "heathens" were throwing at me. All you will eventually get when they run out of excuses is "Well, who can know the mind of god?" and "God works in mysterious ways." I think you are 100% correct. From the time we are little, we are fed this horrible story about a God that demands our worship, our love, our time, our money. If we don't do exactly what he wants, we will be sent to hell where we will burn forever and ever. This is child abuse, actually. I used to be a Christian too, although I don't like to admit it. I was raised in a Christian home. I used to tell people I was born-again, etc. I started to look outside of myself. I started to look at the world. Billions of people are Hindu, Muslim, etc., and Christian people think they all go to hell. Something about that didn't sit right with me. I started to investigate on my own, outside of the church. I started to read everything I could about all different religions. I realized that people of other religions thought they were correct, but I thought they were wrong just because of some barbaric, old book. Everything I believed came from the pages of a stupid old book. I started to use logic and reason. I started to resent being called a sheep. Aren't sheep stupid animals that need a single dog to lead them where they are supposed to go? Aren't sheep usually served up on a plate with some green onions as a side dish? I didn't want to be called a "SHEEP." Well, it is a long story, actually. But I like to say that I grew up. I stopped believing in Santa/God. And things have really been much better ever since. I feel like I know the answers now. With Christianity, questions are like a scourge. All Christians instintively know that they are NOT to ask questions. Now...I LOVE QUESTIONS.
