I use DNT for Firefox. Since Dec. 5, 2012:

334,282 blocked tracking sites total, GLP has three "social" sites and one company trying to track me everytime I'm here.

Use Firefox and download DNT...they work great in concert with each other, as the OP said.

With a Mac you also need to get rid of the Flash cookies. Go to Finder Menu>Go>Library (hold option key down if library isn't there)>Preferences>macromedia>flash player. Look in the folders and see what's there. Amazing.

I'm not good with computers, but I did follow the above advice and added:

go to drop down menu and select "Edit"

Select "Select all" from Select menu

Go to Drop down menu and select "File"

Select "move to trash" and all the files will go to trash, then empty trash by clicking on the trash can and selecting empty trash

Give it time and do some surfing around the internet.

That number will escalate quickly! I'm up to 783 blocked attempts in a couple hours.

Just to give some perspective 334,282 was at 2:33 p.m. GLP time.......now 335,668...that's 1,400 +/- trackers blocked in 3 1/2 hours. Now granted I use my computer a lot and they may just be retailers trying to spam me but it works!

EDIT: 334,282 in the last 60 days

On a few of these programs just make sure you don't participate in sending any of your data back to the tracking blocker by un-ticking the box.

Even if it's done anonymously, what some of these companies are doing is compiling your blocked lists and selling those back to the tracking companies.

In the end that information helps them to fine tune their tracking software to bypass anti-trackers.

Don't participate.

Re: This week, I'm going to show you how to find out if you are being actively tracked online and how to block it permanently.
So last week I started this thread discussing the hidden locked files on your PC called index.dat files and how to erase them for good.

Thread: If you think that erasing your internet files with a program protects you...think again.

This week, I'm going to show you how to not only find out if you are being tracked, and which companies/websites are tracking you, but also how to block them for good.

First, to see if you are actually being tracked. (you are) We will go back to that other thread and download one of the index.dat viewers, specifically Index.dat viewer 3.

You can download it for free from here.

[link to www.softpedia.com]

Once you get that installed, open it and it will automatically list every site that you have clicked on (and some that you haven't). If you followed my other thread and didn't erase them already, naughty naughty.

But regardless, you will still have a few from current internet activity. What you need to do is go through that list and start picking out sites names that you know you haven't clicked on.

One example may be imrworldwide.com. They are a known tracking site and sell your records to anybody who will pay for them. They also target you and do so without your permission. If you;re ok with that, this thread isn't for you.

Pinned

Thank you so much for this OP

Glp needs more threads like this
That's just one example but there may be more. If you don't recognize the url that the index.dat viewer displays, do a Google search on it. Chances are it has been discussed in length at various online forums.

Consider using portable apps from a usb stick. If your paranoid run them from an encrypted container.

That does not remove the files from your hard drive. You have to scrub it or smash it.

Start by doing a 35 pass clean with ccleaner Include a wipe of free space.

If getting rid of the drive but do not want to smash it, do the above and then a full format.

cnn tracking me, wish i understood computers, i downloaded, as usual i get confused, i had 1300 temp files or something, i cant delete all them, call me stupid i dont care, just a foreign language to me, i clicked on albine and there blocking 6 now, rubicon project, cnn, comscore beacon, all time high 161 blocked. anybody know is there a place that is trusted to clean up youre computer and install this shit properly, i get too frustrated and usually end up fucking the computer up then takes days to get it figured out
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26548545

Most computers have a restore partition to restore your computer to same condition when you bought it. Search on how to do that. Make sure you save any files to a usb stick before doing this because it will wipe out anything on your computer. When done with restore use Microsoft command CIPHER /w:C:\ and/or Eraser to clean unused disk space. You can also search on how to use these. You will have to reinstall all of your software. But instead of installing software on your C: drive you could use portable apps including portable Firefox etc. so you don't have to reinstall, just install on usb stick and run from there.

So there seems to be an especially sneaky tracker called Google analytics that makes it through every single anti-tracker that I have tried.

Lo and behold, there is a specific addon for opting out of Google Analytics!

You can download it at this link.

No more analytics either. 5a Works like a charm!

I downloaded the datviewer and the Eraser for Firefox.

My advice? DON'T DO IT!

I'm using IE (first time on this pc) to post this because Firefox is disabled and I'm trying to figure out how to retreive and save my bookmarks before I completely uninstall FF and start over. FF will not open.

I got loaded up with stuff I didn't ask for, like THE VAULT online storage, Coupon Companion, and DJMIX toolbar. I uninstalled these but the DJ toolbar is still in IE. Still need to look for anything else I got for free.

I broke one of my cardinal rules by downloading this stuff, so I'll blame myself.

I have no idea yet how bad this is going to be. Losing the bookmarks is bad enough. After the virus scan completes, I'll see how bad it is.
