It shows the rise in sea to give you an idea of how big or little the waves will be. Quoting: whiteangel [link to www.ndbc.noaa.gov] remember for every 1" of rise in depth it will equal 1' of rise at shore So if this is measuring 3 feet right now in height in the deep ocean it could be a wave 36 feet high when it reaches shore? |

I AM A SCIENTICIAN AND EXPERT. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33707581 100 miles from epicenter? or 100 miles from land? epicenter. Since the ground beneath collapse and water slips in the fault. make sense, but depth of water at buoy will skew the data- ie. if it a wave height is read in 100 feet of water and is 1 meter, when it hits a reef at 20 feet it will be 5 times larger (I think its just a direct ratio). So buoy will give us a height, it really won't be that useful, what will be useful is the period (stregnth/ thickness) of the wave, that is more telling than height. A 20 ft wave at 5 sec is nothing compared to a 5 foot wave at 20 sec. |
