The neutrons jump from on rod to another smashing into atoms and control rods are lowered between them to stop the fissioning.

It DOES work by radioactive emission, but not using Uranium.
Uranium is a mineral, not energy on the electromagnetic spectrum or a particle.

Radiation is a means to describe emissions, ie ; Radiation = To Radiate.
When one speaks of emissions on the electromagnetic scale, they are assuming you comprehend the basis electromagnetic wavelength and scaling, ie : γ Gamma Radiation.
When one is talking about physical radiation, they are assuming you comprehend the concept that particles are emitted, ie α Alpha & β Beta Particles.

There are no pure Gamma emissions, Gamma emissions are accompanied by Alpha and Beta emissions.
