Video Games, Harmful or Helpful? The Facts
These days, video games are growing rapidly in popularity. People have taken to many different opinions on the subject. Some opinions being more positive in nature, while other opinions view video games in a more negative light.

It's only right to look at both sides of this form of entertainment to obtain an opinion that is non-biased towards either side of the issue.

Let's start with the bad.

Video games can become addictive, as with any type of avoidance behaviour. Gamers can escape into a false reality, and their very perception of reality may become unclear. Over users may develop social inabilities, feel shy and become withdrawn from society.

Violence in video games can be ultra-gory, and some games contain adult content quite inappropriate for children. It's argued that violence in video games desensitizes children to violence in real-life and may even lead to violent tendencies.

I would interested in seeing a study where psychotropic drugs are the studied variable in addicted gamers.

Re: Video Games, Harmful or Helpful? The Facts
Unfortunately, the SH event has led to a witch hunt for gamers.

We can study them all we want to, but they are no more "broken" than any other person.

Most gamers (despite their time online, interacting with other gamers, and despite their exposure to violence) do not have homocidal tendencies.

It's easy for non-gamers to point fingers.

And yet, the simple fact remains, that most anyone here reading this thread, and agreeing with gaming being "dangerous," is just as addicted to the internet as anyone else, and is exposed to just as much violence, whether in spoken word, news video, etc.

Heck, we might as well study people who spend more than 10 hours per day online.

When does it end?

I'm thinking "helpful" definitely doesn't apply to about 90% of vidja games.

I say harmful, for the FP shooter games. For the cutesy bullshit games, who cares.

Re: Video Games, Harmful or Helpful? The Facts
Yes some of it it's true. I see it in children being more violent but for grown people it does not apply it depends on each person development. And children can be helped quite easily.

So are video games bad? NO. Some of them are really good in education. It just depends on who's playing them.

Yes, video games can be time-sucking, but I see no reason why they should crack down on gamers because of the violence leading to real-world violence. Sure some people who play violent games end up committing violent acts, but that is not all gamers, just psychopaths.

As for some games being too graphic for young people, I agree, but that's what ratings are for. If parents pay attention to what the game their child is playing is rated, then, problem solved. ;)

Re: Video Games, Harmful or Helpful? The Facts
There is a book called "Reality Is Broken" by Jane McGonigal, and it is about the benefits of video games. According to the book video games can be helpful, but there are conditions:

1. Don’t play more than 21 hours a week. (3 hours a day)

2. Playing with real-life friends and family is better than playing alone all the time, or with strangers.

3. Playing face-to-face with friends and family beats playing with them online.

4. Cooperative gameplay, overall, has more benefits than competitive gameplay.

5. Creative games have special positive impacts.

and 2 Other Important Rules:

*** You can get all of the benefits of a good game without realistic violence--you (or your kids) don’t have to play games with guns or gore.

If you feel strongly about violence, look to games in other genres--there’s no shortage of amazing sports, music, racing, puzzle, role-playing, casual, strategy and adventure games.

***Any game that makes you feel bad is no longer a good game for you to play.

This should be obvious, but sometimes we get so caught up in our games that we forget they’re supposed to be fun.

If you find yourself feeling really upset when you lose a game, or if you’re fighting with friends or strangers when you play--you’re too invested. Switch to a different game for a while, a game that has “lower stakes” for you personally.

Peacehf

Everyone has a predispostion to some sort of addiction. Video games are nothing more than that, an addiction.

Some people drink/do drugs, some gamble, some are addicted to lying, some shop, some watch too much tv, some spend too much time on internet/social media, some play video games.

Imho, they are a colossal waste of time, especially adults who play them. Sad.
