Agreed! I live in PB, so we'd both be fucked if there was a serious accident at San Onofre.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission only requires a 10 mile evacuation from a nuclear plant here in the USA. The NRC assumes any radiation plume would be "diluted enough" so as to not impact people beyond 10 miles - is this some kind of sick fucking joke?

The NRC recommended a 50 mile evacuation zone, for the Fukushima Daiichi nuke plant, in March 2011.

Downtown San Diego is just about 50 miles from the San Onofre. Downtown LA is 68 miles away.

Evacuees within 10 miles north of San Onofre will be directed to the Orange County Reception and Decontamination Center at the Orange County Fairgrounds, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.

Evacuees from San Onofre State Beach will be directed south to the Reception and Decontamination Center at Carlsbad High School, 3550 Monroe Street, Carlsbad.

The closest incorporated city in San Diego is the City of Oceanside which is approximately 17 miles south of the plant. Since they are outside the 10 mile zone, there is no evacuation plan for this city or any other city South or East of the plant.

California Sen. Barbara Boxer pressed federal regulators Wednesday to open an investigation into equipment problems at the shuttered San Onofre nuclear power plant.

In a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Democrat said information in a previously unreleased report shows operator Southern California Edison and the company that built the plant's ailing steam generators, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, were aware of design problems before the equipment was installed.

Edison spokeswoman Maureen Brown did not immediately respond to an email and phone message seeking comment. Mitsubishi spokesman Patrick Boyle did not immediately respond to an email or phone message seeking comment.

In a statement issued by spokesman Victor Dricks, the NRC confirmed it had received the letter and would respond in the normal course of business.

"As an independent safety agency, we will review all available information in making a judgment as to whether the plant would meet our safety standards if restart were permitted," the NRC said.

Here's a radioactive plume model resulting from a severe nuclear accident at San Onofre, as calculated by NRDC (based on the actual weather patterns of March 11-12, 2011). The result on any given day will vary according to the type of reactor accident and on the prevailing weather patterns at the time:

The severity of the accident, weather patterns, as well as the type and amount of Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) stored at the site, are all factors in any relevant modeling. I'm not sure if NRDC took the SNF into account.

We all remember the frenzy over Potassium Iodide (KI), after Fukushima, but KI can only provide protection for one organ, the thyroid gland, from radiation due to one radionuclide - radioiodine. It doesn't have any value in protecting other organs of the body or in providing protection from radiation from other radioactive nuclides.

How much SNF and of what type is stored at San Onofre?

While the plant is currently offline, the San Onofre Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) is storing a total of 1,115 SNF assemblies in 47 casks (plus one cask containing the Greater-Than-Class-C (GTCC) waste from Unit 1).

While that report documents the number of casks and that only 1 contains GTCC waste, the other 47 casks are assumed to have less toxic waste - a big assumption. I'd like to see the specifics.
