Re: OBAMAPHONES for jobless; Contract awarded to Provide free Androids
The other day, I was getting ready to fill my tank at a gas station when a female of 30-something approach me to ask for money. She told me that she had walked a mile or so to work but do not have any money and was hungry.

So I told her to go into the gas station shop and pick up whatever she wanted to eat and I'll pay for it (I don't like to give out straight cash, because I don't know what will be done of it.)

Anyway, she pointed me out to the Church chicken restaurant and that she wanted some chicken? WOW. Starving and choosy? WTF. I kept my cool and just told her that if she is hungry go inside the gas station and get something less than $8. She complied but the attitude.

I could have just driven off, but I went in and paid for her anyway.

I know I should not feel bad for declining people. I am working on being less-guilty of helping these types of people.

Unbelievable! I'm glad the USA is rolling in so much dough so we can offer all these freebies to people who probably not paying much if anything into our tax system.

My taxes go up while someone else gets a free smartphone with service?

So these phones are for the jobless hoping to help them find jobs. If giving all the unemployed a smartphone makes jobs appear out of no where then yeah it would be a good idea but that is not the case.

Most of the unemployed are unemployed for 1 of 2 reasons.

#1. They cannot find a job or get hired with a potential employer because the job market is so saturated with candidates who are willing to make $10 with a bachelor's degree. The employer holds out, hires the person with the most experience for the least amount of pay.

#2 These people are just lazy and they don't want to work. They won't use that damn phone to find a job. They'll use it to play Angry Birds and update their Facebook status.

It's not like there are millions of unfilled jobs floating around...but hey if an Android Obamaphone makes those appear out of no-where for these "needy" people then more power to the Android Obamaphone program.

You're not paying for it. Has nothing to do with you or anybody else's taxes.

No such thing as an Obama phone.

There is one problem with the Obama Phone: It doesn’t exist.
Since 2009, there has been an urban myth that Obama created a program to provide free phones to low-income Americans at taxpayer expense. There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush.
The idea of providing low-income individuals with subsidized phone service was originated in the Reagan administration following the break-up of AT&T in 1984. (It was expanded and formalized by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.) The program is paid for by telecommunications companies through an independent non-profit, not through tax revenue.

You really need to stay away from that web site you got the info off and always go to the source. This is not the same thing. Read the direct FCC proposal.

Snip form the FCC proposal; Equally important, however, is the need to fix the contribution methodology, or the “taxing” side of the ledger. In other words, who is going to pay for all of this and how? Today, we start to collect an array of ideas to answer these questions.

To put the importance of contribution reform into perspective, the contribution factor, a type of tax paid by telephone consumers, has risen each year from approximately 5.5 percent in 1998 to almost 18 percent in the first quarter of this year. This trend is unacceptable because it is unsustainable. Furthermore, the cryptic language on consumers’ phone bills, combined with the skyrocketing “tax” rate, has produced a new form of “bill shock.” We must tame this wild automatic tax increase as soon as possible.

I am delighted that we are finally picking up where the Commission left off in 2008. I recognize that implementing reform will not be easy. Precisely because today’s notice asks such a broad range of questions, all stakeholders will have an opportunity to find something controversial and undesirable, in their view. Controversy, however, should not deter us from lowering the tax rate while broadening the base according to the authority granted to us by Congress. The current pool of contributors is shrinking. It must be expanded, but we must do so only within our statutory authority while keeping in mind the international implications of our actions. Accordingly, I hope that all commenting parties will also tell us what they like about any of the proposed ideas as well as offer us their new ideas.

PDF Straight from the FCC, the money has dried up!

Consumers already pay a fee "funny FCC always calls it a tax in official documents" on their landline and cellular phone bills to support the FCC's Universal Service Fund. The fund was created to ensure that everyone in the country has access to telephone service, even if they live in remote areas.

Last year, the FCC overhauled a $4.5 billion portion of the Universal Service Fund and converted it into a broadband Internet subsidy, called the Connect America Fund. The new fund aims to subsidize the construction of high-speed Internet networks to the estimated 19 million Americans who currently lack access.

Julius Genachowski, the FCC's chairman, has made expanding broadband access his top priority. He argues that a high-speed Internet connection is critical for succeeding in the 21st century economy and that expanding Internet access is the country's next great infrastructure challenge.

But the money for the new Internet subsidy is still coming from the fees on phone bills.

And in recent years, with more people sending emails instead of making long-distance phone calls, the money flowing into the program has begun to dry up. The Universal Service fee has had to grow to a larger and larger portion of phone bills to compensate.

The FCC floated a number of ideas for reforming the fund's contribution system. In addition to the broadband fee, the commission also sought comments on taxing text messages, as well as levying a flat fee on each phone line, instead of the current system, which is based on a portion of the revenue from interstate phone calls.

Did no one read the link?

Federal pilot contracts for the Internet program were awarded in December and are an expansion of the $2.4 billion-a-year Lifeline phone program, which is funded by a “universal service” charge of about $2.50 per household added to customers’ monthly bills. The decades-old program was used to subsidize landlines and attracted little scrutiny, but since 2008, when it began paying for cellphones, demand has exploded, largely because of the efforts of TracFone, which has cornered the market on the subsidized distribution of phones without Internet data plans.

“TracFone currently has over 4 million Lifeline subscribers. Furthermore, in every state in which TracFone provides Lifeline service it has increased the Lifeline participation rate by a substantial percentage,” TracFone wrote in its proposal for the broadband pilot.

TracFone, the nation’s largest provider of prepaid cellphone services, provides far more subsided service than any other telecommunications company, with more than three times as many recipients as Verizon.

America Movil’s Mr. Fuentes acknowledged that growth in the program was a result of its marketing, including canvassing, promoting “free camera phones” with 250 minutes of talk time.

We do a very aggressive advertising, grass-roots campaigns to alert the people that this government program is available,” he said.

Different approach

Last year, the FCC announced its intention to expand the program to provide broadband Internet, envisioning cable companies providing wired hookups to home computers. In December, it selected proposals from 14 companies for a $25 million pilot program, the vast majority of which provide DSL hookups for desktop or laptop computers, and many of which also require digital literacy training.

But TracFone’s proposal was different. There would be no computers in sight, no opportunities to practice typing, read extensively or polish a resume. The company proposed instead simply offering fancier phones with Internet plans included, something it knows appeals to the poor.

“As proposed by TracFone, 500,000 to 1,000,000 low-income households would participate in the trial. In the pilot program

A spokesman for the FCC did not say whether the fund had a large surplus or how the full-scale broadband program would be financed, except that it would not be by adding a charge to consumers’ Internet bills.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18242403

I am paying for it. If you have any type of phone you are too. I have a phone both a cell and landline so I pay it double. "Obamaphone" is paid for with the Federal Universal Service Fund which per both of my phone bills I am paying for (it may also be listed as a Universal Connection Fee). I have a Universal Service Fund fee on both of these bills under the taxes section of my bill.

Yes, program was actually created in 1985 allowing discounted phone service to the needy. It was eventually changed allowing completely free cell phone service.

[link to obamaphone.net] is a link for the program as of today.

[link to www.fcc.gov] is a link for how the program is SUPPOSED to be. Note that it does not say free phone, it says discounted. And it is only supposed to be a discount $9.25 per month on average.

The "Obamaphone" on the other hand gives completely free phones with 250 completely free minutes per month. That costs more than 9.25 a month. A phone with 250 minutes is not 9.25 a month so under the new program people are getting much more than what the program was intended for.

Universal Service Fund info: [link to en.wikipedia.org]

I worked for a cell phone company for 13 years..just left the job 2 years ago. Over the course of my 13 year employment with this company I saw bills go on average from $40 per month to over $100 per phone per month. There were at least 3 major government mandates when I was with this company....and if we didn't just put the fee for it on the bill then the cost of the plans would increase or the minutes available in those plans would decrease. For example our 600 minute plan went to 400 minutes for the same price after one of these mandates took effect.

When you notice the price of your service increase you can bet there is some kind of government mandated program behind it.

Most consumers don't know what was in the Telecommunications Act of 1996. For example, it also includes the LNP or WLNP mandate where you can port your number from one carrier to another. Two months after that part of the act was put into place one of our competitors added a charge of 1.50 per month to bills to cover the cost of the government program. The company I worked for followed suit except ours was a little less at 1.32 a month. Either way, those companies do pass on those fees to the consumer. You may not notice it right away but you will get charged for it somehow.

If you're white and unemployed, then you got to know somebody to get a job. They want whitey to look out for themselves.
Hey, that's how I got my job I have now. Just landed it,too. Taking care of an elderly woman who will be 80 this month. She has Parkinson's and slight dementia. But At the moment, it's all I could find. My sister helped me get the job because she knows the lady whose mom I'm taking of through church. Hey something is better than nothing at this point.

And so far, things are going very well. Hopefully,it will be long term. Doesn't look like things are gonna get better any time soon. Pisses me off. I have to earn my money and I have no problem doing that, but why should the rest of these fuckers get first pick when we are applying for the same job just because they're black and these employers have a frigging quota to fill? It's BS to me!

All I got is a basic cell phone, no internet, no bs frills. I don't need it. I just use it to call when I need to talk to someone. Other than that, I don't use it.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH:
Alan Isaacman
The People Vs Larry Flynt
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you've heard a lot here today and I won't try to go back over it all. But you have to go back in that room and make some decisions and there is one thing I want to make very clear to you before you do. I'm not trying to convince you that you should like what Larry Flynt does. I don't like what he does. But what I do like is... that I live in a country... where you and I can make that decision for ourselves. I like that I live in a country where I can pick up Hustler magazine... read it if I want... or throw it in the trash, if that's where I think it belongs. Or better yet I can express my opinion by not buying it. I like that right. I care about it. And you should care about it, too... because we live in a free country. We say that a lot, but sometimes we forget what that means, so listen again. We live in a free country. That is a powerful idea. That's a magnificent way to live. But there is a price for that freedom, which is that sometimes... we have to tolerate things that we don't necessarily like. So go back in that room... where you are free to think whatever you want to think... about Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine. But then ask yourselves if you want to make that decision for the rest of us... because the freedom that everyone in this room enjoys... is, in a very real way, in your hands. If we start throwing up walls against what some of us think is obscene... we may wake up one morning and realize... that walls have been thrown upin places we never expected... and we can't see anythingor... do anything. And that's not freedom. That is not freedom. So, be careful. Thank you."

I don't know if that makes me sound like a c*nt but I think it's better to teach people how to help themselves. Handing out money only teaches them to go around asking for money. Right? or not?

Congrats on the job, I no longer have a cell phone at all. And people say "OMG what do you do if your car breaks down????" lol. um, I don't know, whatever people did in the 90s. Its very freeing. And you would be amazed at how much time opens up when you're not worried about texting and calling constantly. I suppose Ill never be able to tear myself away from my laptop though.

I hate having hard earned money confiscated from people who work & handed over to those who do not work so they can surf the web from a mobile device.

if they are unemployed, they have ample time to use computers for free at a library, the employment office, schools, etc.

Agreed, but sadly, we're all under a huge wave of marxism all over the planet.. Losers want to live at the expense of hard–working people and they seem to be winning for now....

It's sad that they don't see that once we are disarmed and America is the Socialist state they've always dreamed of, they are going to be either forced to work or done away with.

They have showed their inability to reason, susceptability to propaganda, incredible sense of greed, and disloyalty to their own countrymen.

No dictatorship puts up with that shit.

Re: OBAMAPHONES for jobless; Contract awarded to Provide free Androids

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18242403

Actually, the phone company DOES pay for the minutes by billing YOU. Look for a "Universal Service Fee" on your next bill. THAT is where the money for "free minutes" comes from.

Is the program called "Keep Track of Useless Eaters for Future Relocation?"

ufo56,

Actually, a job, car and apartment sounds more in order than a cell phone.

This defeats the initial purpose of telephone service, which was based on providing telephone service to those in rural areas of America and under obama, has become another benefit for those collecting welfare. Thus, it is but a mere benefit for those who refuse to take responsibility for their lives and deem this to be another of their “rights”.
