Anonymous Coward User ID: 17338098 United States 02/06/2013 07:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Unbelievable! I'm glad the USA is rolling in so much dough so we can offer all these freebies to people who probably not paying much if anything into our tax system. My taxes go up while someone else gets a free smartphone with service? So these phones are for the jobless hoping to help them find jobs. If giving all the unemployed a smartphone makes jobs appear out of no where then yeah it would be a good idea but that is not the case. Most of the unemployed are unemployed for 1 of 2 reasons. #1. They cannot find a job or get hired with a potential employer because the job market is so saturated with candidates who are willing to make $10 with a bachelor's degree. The employer holds out, hires the person with the most experience for the least amount of pay. #2 These people are just lazy and they don't want to work. They won't use that damn phone to find a job. They'll use it to play Angry Birds and update their Facebook status. It's not like there are millions of unfilled jobs floating around...but hey if an Android Obamaphone makes those appear out of no-where for these "needy" people then more power to the Android Obamaphone program. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 18242403 United States 02/06/2013 07:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No such thing as an Obama phone. There is one problem with the Obama Phone: It doesn’t exist. Since 2009, there has been an urban myth that Obama created a program to provide free phones to low-income Americans at taxpayer expense. There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush. The idea of providing low-income individuals with subsidized phone service was originated in the Reagan administration following the break-up of AT&T in 1984. (It was expanded and formalized by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.) The program is paid for by telecommunications companies through an independent non-profit, not through tax revenue. |

Anyway, she pointed me out to the Church chicken restaurant and that she wanted some chicken? WOW. Starving and choosy? WTF. I kept my cool and just told her that if she is hungry go inside the gas station and get something less than $8. She complied but the attitude. I could have just driven off, but I went in and paid for her anyway. I know I should not feel bad for declining people. I am working on being less-guilty of helping these types of people. i got a lil story... same principle applies to Obamaphones... I used to work at a pizza place... these people used to call in and talk to the manager and give em a boo wooo story "We got 3 kids and we're starving to death, we have no food, please help, havent ate in a week" they would pull this stunt about every 2 months... My boss was too nice to say no and would take their order... thing is... they were PICKY! and ordered enough food to feed 10 people to the point of gluttony... well they called in one day and they spoke to the boss... and the boss knew they were BSing... but couldnt turn them down... my boss started venting to me about it... So I said... alright... they are starving and dying... Let's run 4 large pan pizza crusts through the oven... no toppings... just the crust... FYI that is pretty much how pizza chains make breadsticks... if they are really starving they will accept it and smile and thank you... then you can feel good about helping someone in need... if they are scammers they will throw a fit and be hateful... sure enough when they came in... the 3 supreme pizzas and cheesesticks and wings werent waiting on them... 4 orders of XL Breadsticks were... they got mad as hell and refused to take them... they never bummed again. same deal with the obamaphone... if those people need... really really need a cellphone... they will take any phone they can get... even if it isnt a smartphone... |

Federal pilot contracts for the Internet program were awarded in December and are an expansion of the $2.4 billion-a-year Lifeline phone program, which is funded by a “universal service” charge of about $2.50 per household added to customers’ monthly bills. The decades-old program was used to subsidize landlines and attracted little scrutiny, but since 2008, when it began paying for cellphones, demand has exploded, largely because of the efforts of TracFone, which has cornered the market on the subsidized distribution of phones without Internet data plans. “TracFone currently has over 4 million Lifeline subscribers. Furthermore, in every state in which TracFone provides Lifeline service it has increased the Lifeline participation rate by a substantial percentage,” TracFone wrote in its proposal for the broadband pilot. TracFone, the nation’s largest provider of prepaid cellphone services, provides far more subsided service than any other telecommunications company, with more than three times as many recipients as Verizon. America Movil’s Mr. Fuentes acknowledged that growth in the program was a result of its marketing, including canvassing, promoting “free camera phones” with 250 minutes of talk time. “We do a very aggressive advertising, grass-roots campaigns to alert the people that this government program is available,” he said. Different approach Last year, the FCC announced its intention to expand the program to provide broadband Internet, envisioning cable companies providing wired hookups to home computers. In December, it selected proposals from 14 companies for a $25 million pilot program, the vast majority of which provide DSL hookups for desktop or laptop computers, and many of which also require digital literacy training. But TracFone’s proposal was different. There would be no computers in sight, no opportunities to practice typing, read extensively or polish a resume. The company proposed instead simply offering fancier phones with Internet plans included, something it knows appeals to the poor. “As proposed by TracFone, 500,000 to 1,000,000 low-income households would participate in the trial.
