This rock has been in my family for generations, is it a real Meteorite?
The story goes that my great great grandfather found this rock when he was digging a foundation to a house many years ago. It is not magnetic but seems really heavy for its size. There is a part of the outer burnt shell that is broken off and looks like normal rock inside.

I hope someone with some education in Meteorites or Geology can tell me what it is.

So what do you think?

Interesting.

Why not take it to a local university with a Geologic dept?
Just a thought.

Thats a piece of natural, terrestrial iron. Very neat specimen.

I would absolutely do that. Would I just have to call up the local university to set up an appointment or something. Who could ID this thing for me?

Iron slag would be magnetic correct, this is not. This looks like rock with a burn exterior not metal in any way..

Re: This rock has been in my family for generations, is it a real Meteorite?
it is mostly iron sulfide aka iron pyrite.

it is interesting how it appears to be a type of conglomerate as well.

you can prove my assertion by taking a propane torch to it...it will give off sulfur vapour BUT if it could decompose and throw off projectile pieces...so do so at your own risk.

it looks odd...appears to have nickel in it or? any geologist can help you out on this. ..it is NOT a meteorite. Take it to the nearest university and you'll find plenty of willing opinions in their geology dept.

Re: This rock has been in my family for generations, is it a real Meteorite?
If it's from space the non-iron part will have what are called chondrules in it. They are little round inclusions that are only formed in zero gravity in a cloud of gas and dust. Chondrules do not form in terrestrial earth rock so if they are there, the rock is from space.

Look up photos of them and see if your rock has any. You may need to sand off some of the rusty shell to get to the fresh rock underneath to see if they are there.

Chondrules are the round things in the photo.

I image searched Iron Slag and it doesn't look like any of the pictures that came up. They all show small lava rock type holes and most are rust looking. This does not have any of those characteristics..

I was looking up what you said and the pictures of Iron Pyrite resemble what i have. If you would of gave me a minute to research it I would of said your were most likely correct.
Chill out some next time, not everyone has an vast education on this shit.

Re: This rock has been in my family for generations, is it a real Meteorite?
That is not a meteorite.

Some "rocks in the family" tales.

A man in rural Alabama had a rock on his porch for generations, since the days of the oppression. They used it as a doorstop, was about the size of a football. My master smith almost had a heart attack when he saw it, recognizing it as a gold nugget worth a massive sum even in those days of cheap gold.

Another friend of mine had a "magic rock" from his ranch out west. Was bright neon orange with crystal bumps, and they thought it was cursed. Thrown in the pond, everything died. In the garden, everything died. He was not surprised to learn it was actually a radioactive material, and sold the family land to Uncle Sam for a tidy sum.

If your rock was a meteorite, of any material other than the usual nickel-iron compound, you would have a real treasure. Otherwise, you've got a fine doorstop.
