A solar 'superstorm' is coming and we'll only get 30-minute warning
A solar "superstorm" could knock out Earth's communications satellites, cause dangerous power surges in the national grid and disrupt crucial navigation aids and aircraft avionics, a major report has found.

"The general consensus is that a solar superstorm is inevitable, a matter not of 'if' but 'when?'," says a report into extreme space weather by a group of experts at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London.

It's about all you get Bruddah... IF that.

That is of course, if you're sitting here on GLP.

I doubt the Lame Stream Media could get their shit together after all the confirmations that go through from solar observatories.

It's not like there's a group of people sitting there "waiting" for an X26+ to push some magic buton and notify the rest of us.

Actually We've all been warned for years...

You would be surprised at the contingency plans in place to deal with this event.

Where I live the local electrical authority have a cunning plan.

To stick their heads between their legs and kiss their arse goodbye. lol

No seriously tho, men would be sent out to open all the breakers on the overhead lines and ground all the substations.

Should take no more than 30 minutes.
They also get an instant warning via nasa, as do all other power companies, to prep for a shut down.

So it will all go dark and then the aurora will be fantastic with no bloody lights on.

I was gonna rant, but I deleted it.... Let me put it to you this way.

When the lights go out state/nation/world-wide. NO ONE is coming to help you. Do you want to know why?

We'll be too busy helping ourselves.

I have seen the contingency plans. I have been a part of the meetings. I have offered input and been commended for my ideas. Yet one thing remains.

RESOURCES.

In a local event, there are plenty of resources to provide assistance. Regional... Sure. That will also be taken care of (NOT as you say, in "30 minutes") but it will be handled. Statewide, it's gonna take a while. Nation-wide. SORRY. We have protocols in place which make command and control a priority, followed by care facilities, followed by everything else. THIS can take MONTHS if not a year or two.

It's not like a "breaker" would be tripped.... The transformers at the substations would literally MELT down. (The Copper inside of them is finely wound tight, but would not be able to take the surge.)

WHERE would the new transformers come from???

They will have been earthed, thus will be protected from the induced currents set up in the power lines.

They rehearse this scenario every year where I live.

if the sub stations with the transfomers are earthed then grids can be restarted after the event.

It's not going to be a "walk in the park" but all modern grids have been designed to be protected from this event.

Some countries will be seriously affected, but most of europe are as near ready as they can be.

Oh you can also guarantee that there will be troops on the ground and dusk to dawn curfews, but most people will look out for each other as its a basic natural instinct to help others.

Just to add, the breakers are operated manually, on lager grids they can and are operated remotely, its the substations which house the stepup and stepdown transformers that need to be protected, which they can be.

All grids can cycle down in minutes.

Nukes take longer of course but as long as they are grounding the output they should be ok ( I bloody hope).

Cycling everything back up afterwoods should be relativly straight forward but will take a few hours to a day or two.

As long as the transformers and alternators are isolated from the grid wires and grounded they will survive.
